LEADIN:
Russian orthodox priests and medics have come up with a novel way to visit the faithful in remote areas in Siberia.
They travel up Ob River in a church-boat to share the gospel and their expertise with people in hard to reach villages.
STORYLINE:
A unique missionary trip is about to get underway in Siberia.
Metropolitan (arch bishop) Nicodim performs a prayer for the success of the mission and blesses travellers on the pier.
Orthodox priests will set sail on a church-boat, visiting remote areas in need of spiritual support.
They will travel up the Ob river from the river station of Novosibirsk on the 'Holy Apostle Andrew, the First-Called' boat.
"The missionary trip with the help of the ship, on the waters, began in the Novosibirsk diocese almost 23 years ago. By that time, people hadn't seen the priest for maybe 70-80 years," says Nikodim.
Since then the tradition has become annual.
Apart from the priests a team of medical staff are also onboard.
Most of the settlements on the route have no churches and have very limited access to medical services.
They are also hard to reach by road.
"Sometimes there isn't even a normal road, the village is out of the way, the road is washed out, people are busy, summer, harvest, you won't go in winter, it's snow, frost, this is Siberia. But here you are, it's all come to you, and you don't have to make any efforts to go somewhere. The medical specialists - here they are, help - here it is, the priest - here, the temple has sailed up to you," explains Nikodim.
According to the local Eparchy (province of the Orthodox Church / diocese), more than 100-thousand people have received help during the 23 years of operation of the boat-church.
The first stop on the route this year is Kruglikovo village.
It is 200 kilometres away from Novosibirsk, and part of the road is in bad condition.
"We have a paramedic's station, and I think three times a week the medic comes here and serves the population," says local citizen Oleg Chekini.
"As for the priests, this is only once every two years approximately that we have them coming."
He says there once used to be a wooden church in the village, but it was destroyed.
Today the nearest church and hospital are in the district centre, in another village located 50 kilometres away.
"Many people just cannot go out of the village, because some people live so poorly that to go to the church is a problem, or old people cannot go, so of course it is very important," says local citizen Olga Gerasimova.
The mobile church is being set up in the village's cultural house.
The services required by locals vary.
Sometimes people wish to have their houses consecrated, to get a blessing, to confess, to pray for their relatives and loved ones, but most people come to get baptised and have their children baptised.
Archpriest Konstantin Rabota says that "every time in every settlement there are exceptional cases."
"Today a woman came and said - my loved one is in a serious condition, he will pass away soon, please, can you come, take his confession, give him communion, so that he will go to God with a pure heart."
"(In the past) we had a lot of people who came unaware that they had very serious diseases and due to early diagnosis, they stayed alive, and when we come later, they come to the doctors to say thank you, because if it were not for this mission, they wouldn't be alive," adds Rabota.
Nearby, doctors use the local school as their temporary offices.
Local citizen Svetlana Zakharova takes up this opportunity to be checked by an ophthalmologist.
"(You don't always have) the opportunity to go to the district centre and get to the doctor, it's big queues, and it's not quite simple to get to the district centre, so it's really good (to have doctors coming to us) and we are very grateful," says Zakharova.
There are eleven medical specialists on the mission including a surgeon, endocrinologist, otolaryngologist, and specialists for medical tests.
Ear, nose and throat specialist Denis Bel'skiy says:
"What we are doing,I believe in God and all good deeds that we are making will be reckoned to us up there, when we will be in the other world."
In the two weeks between August 15 to August 31 they will visit 45 settlements.
More villages down the river will have to wait until next year's trip.
