STORYLINE:
Diplomats from across the Americas were in the Colombian city of Medellin for the 49th general assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS).
The event on Wednesday was inaugurated in a square, adorned by bronze statues sculpted by renown artist Fernando Botero.
The regional organization, which includes all independent nations in the western hemisphere, will tackle economic issues, human rights and security issues during its annual general assembly.
But the political crisis in Venezuela and the exodus of millions of desperate Venezuelans across the region are expected to be the main topics.
On Wednesday, Colombian President Ivan Duque spoke at the general assembly inauguration and urged OAS member states to take actions that will put diplomatic pressure on what he called Venezuela's "dictatorship".
He said the organization should seek to restore the "freedom" of the Venezuelan people.
OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro also spoke at the event.
