1. Medium Scarlett Johansson talks with reporter at Comic-Con
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Scarlett Johansson, actress:
"For me, even after 'Endgame,' it felt like I was happy to wrap up my part and I felt really good about the work that we did, so the only reason to make this film was if we could elevate the genre in some other way. And Kevin also felt that way, Kevin Feige, so we have held hands, cried together, laughed together, battled it out and you know carved out this unique place where we find Natasha. And being able to bring Cate Shortland on board to direct it is just like exactly – I could not have imagined a better way to be doing this. So it's awesome."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Scarlett Johansson, actress:
"It's been great! It's been a really positive, really wonderful year. I feel very, very fortunate and very happy."
5. Medium Rachel Weisz talks with reporter
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rachel Weisz, actress:
(Reporter: "Are you excited to play a villain?")
"Who says I'm a villain?"
(Reporter: "We think you're a villain because of the character name.")
Weisz: "Oh, OK, well – right – yeah, Melina Vostokoff. I can tell you that she's been cycled through the Red Room widow program five times so she is a highly trained spy and assassin, and that she's also deep in some kind of scientific work. That's all I can say."
7. Wide Florence Pugh on arrivals line
8. Medium Florence Pugh talks with reporter
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Florence Pugh, actress:
"The character is Natasha's sister, Yelena. She is a very cool person to play. We've been on it for about a month or so and it's just been the most exhilarating and exciting shoot to be on. And I've been fighting and laughing and hugging Scarlett. And I couldn't have asked for a better film to be working on right now. It's been totally exciting. And also this is my first Comic-Con and I got to be here with Scarlett and David and Rachel and Cate and O-T. It was one of those moments where you're like, in literally 10 hours time, I'm going to think back and wonder if it was real."
(Reporter: "And there's a female Thor and Natalie Portman's in it – what was all that like?")
"I know. So many women that I've looked up to my entire life. I remember watching Natalie Portman when I was tiny and just hoping one day I would be within like talking distance. And I was today. I was on the same stage, which is mental. It's a good time. It's a good time."
10. Medium Florence Pugh talks with reporter
11. SOUNDBITE (English) Florence Pugh, actress:
"Even our story is about these amazing women, who are not strong. I keep on correcting people when they're saying that these are about strong women. No, these women are just – they are them. They are broken, they are raw and from that, they are strong. And watching them combat their history, that has been the most exciting thing for me."
12. Medium David Harbour talks with reporter
13. SOUNDBITE (English) David Harbour, actor:
"I play Alexi Shostakov, which is something called the Red Guardian. So in the Cold War, the nuclear arms race was on between the Soviets and the Americans. They developed Captain America, and the Soviets responded with the Red Guardian. But he is a little more complicated in his path. And he hasn't acquired the notoriety of someone like Captain America in a way. So yeah, he's got all these interesting character quirks. But he is this big Soviet superhero, this big figure in Soviet comic world. And he's also got tons of surprises to his character, like tons of interesting things about him, secrets. And it's really fun to play."
(Reporter: "Can we hear a little bit of your accent?")
Harbour: "I don't know. I don't want to get it you know, come on I don't - this guy. It's just a lot of grumbling, things like that. I'm working on it. I haven't shot a lot yet."
14. Medium O-T Fagbenle talks with reporter
15. SOUNDBITE (English) O-T Fagbenle, actor:
"Easy. I don't go out much, so I don't have many people I could tell. But it is – it's kind of like the worst kept secret, because it was just online, and my face is online, and I'm like OK so I'm not supposed to talk about it? But you know – now, getting to come to Comic-Con, I can kind of get it. Because the fans really appreciated that."
16. Medium Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige talks with reporter
17. SOUNDBITE (English) Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios president:
(Reporter: "Black Widow is dead. This is a prequel. Does Black Widow the character have any place in the future of the Marvel cinematic universe?")
"Good question. Not going to answer it."

STORYLINE:
JOHANSSON SAYS SHE 'BATTLED IT OUT' TO MAKE 'BLACK WIDOW' FOR MARVEL
Scarlett Johansson says she "battled it out" to make a "Black Widow" movie for Marvel Studios.
Her character was killed off in the superhero juggernaut "Avengers: Endgame" earlier this year, seemingly permanently. And Johansson said in an interview at Comic-Con on Saturday (20 JULY 2019) that she had made peace with that fate - before negotiating to make a solo film with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.
"For me, even after 'Endgame,' it felt like I was happy to wrap up my part and I felt really good about the work that we did, so the only reason to make this film was if we could elevate the genre in some other way. And Kevin also felt that way, Kevin Feige," Johansson told The Associated Press. "So we have held hands, cried together, laughed together, battled it out and you know carved out this unique place where we find Natasha. And being able to bring Cate Shortland on board to direct it is just like exactly – I could not have imagined a better way to be doing this. So it's awesome."
Johansson is in the middle of production on "Black Widow," and recently announced her engagement to "Saturday Night Live" lead writer Colin Jost.
"It's been great! It's been a really positive, really wonderful year. I feel very, very fortunate and very happy," the 34-year-old actress said.
Rachel Weisz plays a character named Melina Vostokoff in the film - a villain in the Marvel comics, but Weisz was coy about how her big screen version would behave.
"Who says I'm a villain?" Weisz asked. "I can tell you that she's been cycled through the Red Room widow program five times so she is a highly trained spy and assassin, and that she's also deep in some kind of scientific work. That's all I can say."
Florence Pugh plays the sister of Johansson's character in the movie, which is a prequel of sorts, set after the events of "Captain America: Civil War."
"We've been on it for about a month or so and it's just been the most exhilarating and exciting shoot to be on. And I've been fighting and laughing and hugging Scarlett. And I couldn't have asked for a better film to be working on right now," Pugh said.
She said the "Black Widow" story doesn't focus on quote-unquote "strong women."
"No, these women are just – they are them. They are broken, they are raw and from that, they are strong. And watching them combat their history, that has been the most exciting thing for me," she said.
"Stranger Things" star David Harbour plays a character named the Red Guardian.
"He's got all these interesting character quirks. But he is this big Soviet superhero, this big figure in Soviet comic world. And he's also got tons of surprises to his character, like tons of interesting things about him, secrets. And it's really fun to play," Harbour said.
Will "Black Widow," set to be released in May of next year, be the last time audiences will see Black Widow on-screen in the Marvel cinematic universe? The studio president won't say:
"Good question. Not going to answer it," smiled Feige.
