That's as simple as it is and bring East and West Berliners together and try to make them find common ground and from there make a handshake and and a ball of clay in between their hands will form a shape. A unique shape. And from 11 000 of these shapes we will build a wall of unification. Or a monument to human connection."

So, it felt nice."

Berlin is building a wall - a symbolic one to mark the fall of the wall which divided the German capital under communist rule.
Each piece is made by a handshake between strangers.
STORYLINE
The act is possibly as old as human civilisation.
Shaking hands shows friendship and mutual respect, an act of showing good intentions towards an old friend or a stranger.
To mark 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Dutch artist Meike Ziegler decided to use this act to create imprints which could symbolise a world without borders.
At the Berlin Wall Memorial museum strangers are asked to talk to each other, find some common ground and interests, before shaking hands with the ball of clay.
The aim is to create some 11, 000 of the handshapes before the November 9 anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989.
The wall itself stood for 10,316 days.
"As this was a divided city for a long time, I thought lets take the ingredient of the division, the wall, and create connection. That's as simple as it is and bring East and West Berliners together and try to make them find common ground and from there make a handshake and and a ball of clay in between their hands will form a shape. A unique shape. And from 11,000 of these shapes we will build a wall of unification. Or a monument to human connection."
Some 3000 of the handshapes are already on show in an installation in the museum.
But on the 30th of the anniversary of the fall of the wall, a larger structure will be built outside by the remnants of the Berlin wall.
The project is supported by the Berlin Wall foundation and Visit Berlin and has been running since the start of August.
Volunteers collect the handshapes at several locations in the city, like here at the entrance to the Berlin Wall Museum.
Ziegler says that the project is more important now than ever, with divisions spreading across the world and new walls and barriers being built.
"Yeah we are afraid. There is something going on, I don't know what it is, but, I would like people to step out of their comfort zone and to actually look and listen at each other, or to each other more. So yeah, it is still very relevant this wall here in this city."
Bernardo Sacconi, from Florence Italy and Grace Dugan from Boston in the US, meet at the entrance to the Berlin Wall Museum.
Both are visiting Berlin as tourists, and the Berlin Wall is a stop in their itineraries.
Ziegler asks them to have a conversation, to talk about their lives, and try to find common ground.
They both discover they are creative, Sacconi is a jazz musician and Dugan is a part-time writer.
Then they went ahead of shook hands with the ball of clay.
Afterwards participants are asked to fill in a form, describing their experience.
"Yeah, I liked it a lot. You know, I hadn't really talked to a lot of people today. Especially at this museum, memorial," says Dugan.
"But it was good. To kind of talk about what it means after looking at it. And kind of also understanding the more thematic underlyings of it. So yeah, it was nice to discuss that with someone while you are here. And also breaking of from that and finding other things that connect us on a more personal level."
Sacconi says the experience of breaking down a personal barrier with a stranger is good.
"Yeah, it felt good. It is interesting and inspiring to think about this thing, nowadays. To not feel strangers in this world. And not to feel like you have to defend yourself from something," he says.
The 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall will be celebrated with exhibitions, concerts and remembrance events.
It all starts on 4th of November and ends with a festival by the Brandenburg Gate on the 9th of November.
