STORYLINE
Pope Francis is urging global decision-makers in both the public and private sectors to help address poverty and hunger in rural areas by engaging the local population as "responsible architects" of progress.
Francis was addressing an annual session Thursday of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, a UN agency based in Rome dedicated to eradicating poverty and hunger in rural areas of the developing world.
The pope said that it was necessary to invest in inovation and entrepreneurial capacity led by local people to transform the rural landscape, eradicate malnutrion and promote sustainable development.
"In this context, it is necessary to promote a 'science with conscience' and put technology really at the service of the poor," Francis told the audience.
He praised IFAD for results it has achieved by decentralizing its projects, encouraging regional cooperation and diversifying financial sources.
The Governing Council meets annually, gathering all of IFAD's 176 member states to discuss poverty and hunger in developing countries. This year's meeting was focusing on the theme "Rural Innovation and Entrepeneurial Spirit."
