A Vietnamese expert on Northeast Asia said he is looking forward to the second summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), and expects for the two sides to reach an agreement.
Nguyen Vinh Quang, a senior advisor at the Center for International Relations Development and Strategic Studies in Vietnam, said the country is fully prepared to host the summit, and that he expects some substantive achievements to come out of the summit.
"The summit in Singapore was historic, and I think it was a symbolic meeting. Both parties made promises, and showed their willingness to keep peace, but have no detailed measures for that. The problem of nuclear weapons can't be solved within one or two days, one or two years. It might take years or even decades to solve this problem,"said Nguyen.
Nguyen added that the DPRK and the USA are tackling the problem one step at a time and are still talking to decide on an action plan.
Nguyen is well versed in the situations on the Korean Peninsula and has also visited the DPRK several times. He hopes that during this round of talks, the DPRK and the U.S. will be able to agree on a common ground and bring peace and stability to the region and the world.
"I hope they can achieve a major declaration in Hanoi, and a tentative deal and agreement on establishing the diplomatic relationship between DPRK and USA can be made," said Nguyen.
Kim and Trump are scheduled to arrive at Noi Bai international airport respectively on Tuesday, and the two leaders will hold a two-day summit on Wednesday and Thursday, for further consultation on the situation on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue.
