"We want to show that there are other options in alternative to the industrial beers that for years have been on the market in Belgium, Europe and beyond. They have an enormous monopoly with products that taste pretty much the same; it's all standardized. We, on the other hand, want to show that there are other things, that there are craftsmen, true brewers who are here at the festival. "There's an enormous place for craft beers and this is true for beers all over the world. We want to reconnect people with local products. More and more people now buy local – what they eat, what they drink – and very often they don't even know that maybe there's a great brewery right next them. You know, a lot of people in Brussels don't know Cantillon (beer) for example, not to mention other Belgians. This may seem a bit strange but this is the reality. British craft beer brewers are hoping Brexit won't call time on their industry in Europe.
They've been showcasing their beers at the BXLBeerFest in Brussels along with other international independent brewers.
STORYLINE
Cold. Frothing. Refreshing.
Perfect for a hot late summer weekend.
This is the BXLBeerFest, the annual craft beer festival in Brussels.
In its third edition, the two-day festival is a chance for enthusiasts to taste beer varieties from 57 breweries.
The festival was launched in 2016 by four Belgian independent beer producers and experts.
This year's edition features some 60 breweries from 15 countries across Europe and North America including the UK, United States, France, Poland, Canada, Italy, and Denmark.
Vincent Callut is a craft beer communication expert and a co-organizer of the event.
Callut says the goal is to put Brussels on the map as one of the most interesting places for craft beers:"We want to show that there are other options in alternative to the industrial beers that for years have been on the market in Belgium, Europe and beyond. They have an enormous monopoly with products that taste pretty much the same; it's all standardized."
"We, on the other hand, want to show that there are other things, that there are craftsmen, true brewers who are here at the festival. This is a bit of our signature: you can meet the men and women who are behind those beer bottles and ask them questions. They produce beers with a great range of flavors".
The number of producers who choose bio or local products as the main ingredients for their beers is on the rise,in line with a change in shopping attitudes stemming from climate concerns.
That leaves brewers with an opportunity to conquer a slice of the market, Callut says.
"There's an enormous place for craft beers and this is true for beers all over the world. We want to reconnect people with local products. More and more people now buy local – what they eat, what they drink – and very often they don't even know that maybe there's a great brewery right next to them."
Brussels' traditional Cantillon beer may well generate a buzz outside the country but it remains unknown to many Belgians, Callut adds.
"You know, a lot of people in Brussels don't know Cantillon (beer) for example, not to mention other Belgians. This may seem a bit strange but this is the reality. (Cantillon), on the other hand, is very well known abroad so we have to reconnect locals with what's near them, with their own land".
At the BXLBeerFest brewers take time to a meet and greet beer enthusiasts and share details about their creations.
Unlike industrial brews, the production of craft beers takes weeks instead of days, says Callut, adding that patience pays off by offering more flavorful drinks.
Belgium is renown for the quality of its beers; over the past decades, however, only a fraction of traditional breweries has survived out of the hundreds that existed before industrially-produced beers took over the market.
For British independent brewers yet another threat is looming large: Brexit.
With little time left and no final deal ahead of Britain's expected exit from the European Union on 31 October, independent brewers from England can only put on a brave face.
Jonny Mills is the co-owner of British brewery, Mills Brewing. He's already thinking about contingency plans.
"Yea, we have no idea how that's gonna play out; it's very frustrating. So we'll see. We have a festival in the Netherlands in November. We're gonna make sure the beer gets there before Brexit day whenever the hell that is", Mills says.
Tom Dobson has been working at the Burning Sky brewery since it started production in Southeastern England six years ago.
Dobson hints that the lack of details about a final Brexit deal makes it difficult to know how the business will be affected.
"I don't know what's gonna happen. It's a concern for us, naturally but we'll have to work it out as and when. When we're presented with that reality we'll deal with it", Dobson says.
Katrine Stura from Norway is here with her husband and a group of friends.
"We love beer. We love craft beer, we love Belgian beer. We've been to several beer festivals, we've been to Copenhagen; of course several in Norway, where we live. This time we wanted to try this one in Brussels", Stura says.
Mexican expatriate, Eric Espinosa, says "We love beer and this is a good opportunity to discover new beers, beers from other parts of the world as well as to better learn how to taste them".
BXLBeerFest took place 24-25 August. Some 6,500 people attended.
