"I still don't thin think it. Like, I swear to god, every day, they tell me, 'Megan you're doing a good job. You know, you did this. You did that. Congratulations!' I'm like 'Thank you,' but I've got to work harder. I don't feel like, I know I'm not where I want to be at yet, so I'm just still trying to grind. I still, I don't ever want to feel comfortable, like I don't want to ever get like, 'Oh, yeah, I did this so I can chill now. Like, no. I always got to go hard."

4. SOUNDBITE (English), Megan Thee Stallion, recording artist, on why her fans relate to her:
"I don't know! I really feel like it's probably because I'm just being myself. And you really, I feel like, I feel like you can like people that you could relate to. So I'm not like a bougie (stuck up) kind of person. I'm not a person that will make you feel like I can't be that. I feel like I'm somebody that you just could really relate to. Like you want to sit down and watch some cartoons together? You wanna go out to the club. You want to do your homework together? You know what I'm saying? I feel like I'm just one of those people that you could just do anything with. And that's probably why the 'hotties' (her fans) rock with me so much."

"I'm not a character, literally this is me. So what you see is really what I am. I really am a student. I really am kind of a little nerd but I am very confident in myself and in my body. So, like, I'm going to talk my s*** naturally. That's what just comes across, because that's my personality."

"When I started, it wasn't that I was thinking about other girls, looking at this as, 'Oh my god. That is like awesome. She's such a good example.' Like, I was just looking at it like this is what I'm doing—this is my regular life. But I'm really happy that it is inspiring girls, and it is making people want to further their education and it is keeping them going. So I just think it's amazing."

"I really want to drop my album. And you know, I'm really scared of commitment so like this thing, this album thing is really weighing on me. My mixtapes, they feel like (romantic) dates—not my boyfriend, but we're talking and this is my fans, we're getting to know each other. But then the album is like, 'OK, we go together now, so let's put a ring on it, you know?' So that's what the album feels like to me. So I'm ready. I guess, I'm ready to get it to that."

"My album, the songs that I've been recording for it so far, have been way more soft than my usual music—a little soft in my opinion. It's been a little more vulnerable. I'm not in feelings necessarily, but I'm telling you more about my life. I feel like that's what my fans want to know at this point, so I'm giving y'all a little more insight on why I am the way I am."

14. SOUNDBITE (English), Megan Thee Stallion, recording artist, on gratitude for her big year:
"Sometimes when I'm flying somewhere, I'll be like, 'Damn. I've been on planes for like a week straight, every day I'm somewhere.' And I was like, you know what? I'm not tripping, I won't complain because I remember I used to be at home wishing I was leaving and going to do shows and really praying that I would take it here and do all this so I don't ever complain about the work. Just—I complain about waking up early in the morning to catch them damn flights. But when we get there, I'm gonna turn up. But I'm just grateful for everything that happened this year and even the opportunities that a lot of people have given me."

STORYLINE:
MEGAN THEE STALLION NAMED AN ASSOCIATED PRESS 2019 BREAKTHROUGH ENTERTAINER
Megan Thee Stallion's schedule has become so frenetic that she can spend days, or even longer, away from home, in a different city every night. While the grueling schedule may wear some down, she's taking it all in her stride.
"I won't complain because I remember I used to be at home wishing I was leaving and going to do shows," says the rapper (real name Megan Pete), who was named one of the Associated Press' 2019 Breakthrough Entertainers of the Year. "I'm just grateful for everything that happened this year and even the opportunities that a lot of people have given me."
They've given her those opportunities because of the phenomenal year she's had: The rapper from Houston burst on the music scene and instantly became a sensation. She racked up singles such as "Big Ole Freak," "Cash S***" with Da Baby, and scored her first No. 1 on Billboard's Rhythmic Songs chart with "Hot Girl Summer." The song, featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla $ign, stemmed from a phrase Megan coined that became the hot phrase of the season. Endorsements also blasted her way, including Coach, Puma, and a management deal with the Jay-Z founded Roc Nation.
"Every day, they tell me, 'Megan you're doing a good job,'" referring to her team. "I'm like 'Thank you,' but I got to work harder. I know I'm not where I want to be at yet, so I'm still trying to grind."
The year of peaks were also not without valleys, none lower than the loss of her mother in March. While she doesn't talk about her loss in detail, Megan acknowledged: "This year has definitely been super crazy: a lot of ups, some downs."
But not only has she gone hard in her burgeoning career, but in the classroom as well. Currently enrolled at Houston's Texas Southern, a historically black college and university, Megan has married overt, unapologetic sex appeal with education, a combination rarely seen in hip-hop. She's put #HotGirlSummer on pause for #HotNerdFall and #HotGirlSemester.
"I really am kind of a little nerd, but I am very confident in myself and in my body," said Megan. "It wasn't that I was thinking about other girls, looking at this as, 'Oh my god, this is awesome. She's such a good example.'" She continued: "This is my regular life. But I'm really happy that it is inspiring girls, and it is making people want to further their education."
Megan Thee Stallion is furthering herself as well. She's signed on to star in the new season of NBC's "Good Girls" and she says she'd eventually like to write her own horror film, but her focus is on her debut album, which she says will go beyond sexual imagery she's known for.
"My album, the songs that I've been recording for it so far, have been my way more soft than my usual music—a little soft in my opinion. It's been a little more vulnerable," she said. "I feel like that's what my fans want to know at this point, so I'm giving y'all a little more insight on why I am the way I am."
Mixtape "Fever" by Megan Thee Stallion is out now.
