STORYLINE:
Watching Dave McGillivray run in the rain, it's hard to tell that he had open-heart triple bypass surgery just six months ago.
The Boston Marathon race director has run about 150,000 miles in his life, including the World Marathon Challenge last year – seven marathons in seven days on seven continents.
But racing came to an agonizing halt six months ago, when the 64-year-old had heart surgery, after experiencing recurring chest pain and shortness of breath while running.
"And that's when I realized, for the first time in over 50 years, that just because you're fit doesn't necessarily mean you are healthy – and I thought it did," he said.
McGillivray was not surprised when doctors diagnosed him with severe coronary artery disease.
"My two grandfathers died of heart attacks, my dad had aortic stenosis, my brother had a stroke, my other brother had a stent, my other sister had triple bypass, so the writing was on the artery walls," he said.
He credits his fitness to his remarkable recovery allowing him to run his 47th consecutive Boston Marathon next week.
"You know, I still feel that it's important I have a new mission to create an awareness of this and that if you feel something, do something – act on it, and you can get a second chance like I have," he said.
McGillivray's advocacy has already helped numerous athletes, including Paul Joyce, a part-time fitness instructor.
Joyce developed shortness of breath while teaching his spin class and went to see his doctor, who quickly diagnosed a colon tumor.
He had surgery 19 days later and is preparing for chemotherapy treatment.
"And I basically reached out to Dave through an email just to say, you know, what happened and how he was very influential in my decision to see the doctor," he said.
A message this long-time competitor hopes others will heed – you can't outrun your family history or heart disease.
