2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Daniels/Actor:
"I think we did the right thing right off the bat, which was I watched the movie once, and then put it away. I read the book once, and then again with highlighting Atticus's stuff, and then I went to school on reading, reading on all around Alabama in the 30s, and all that. But we took the approach that we were originating the role, which, you know, it was a play based on the books, so in essence we are originating the role in the play version. So, we made that decision early on, then it didn't, I wasn't suddenly climbing Mount Gregory Peck anymore. I had the opportunity to play it the way I wanted, and it really is. I mean, Peck either did the definitive, can't-imagine-anyone-else in this performance, or he was the only guy who got to do it. And so, if you're going to do it, that's the approach you have to take, and then roll the dice and see what happens."

"I think the big thing that it did in the 60s, that it also does now is it slaps white America in the face. It's a - it's a wake-up call that we need less now. It's probably as pronounced as racism has been in decades. But we still need a reminder that - we have to decide whether there is goodness in everyone. Whether there is compassion and generosity and civility and respect for others in everyone. Atticus believes that, and he comes to find out that that may not be the case. And I think as we look around today, that's an arguable point."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Jeff Daniels/Actor:
"I think the American theater has an opportunity to speak in a very loud voice at times, and 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' the play, does that. There's entertainment, there's art, and then there's changing people. And that's what 'Mockingbird' does. I see it every single night, and to play Atticus Finch is, it's the role of a lifetime, and all I'm trying to do is give the performance of my life every night. Because I know what I got. I know how precious this role is, and that's why I said yes to it for a year."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Celia Keenan-Bolger/Actress:
"I felt the weight of the expectation enormously when we started. I think Scout Finch is like the greatest literary heroine of all time. So, you feel like, 'Don't mess this up.' But I think the good thing - I tried to a fair amount of research about Alabama in 1934. I tried to do research about Harper Lee, so I would at least feel like I had a little more information than I would have if I just read the book and loved it and came and saw the play. And once we started working, I was able to sort of just focus on the work and be relieved of all of the ways that people were going to, you know, want it to be a certain way."

"I think… Of course, I want our show to be nominated for everyone and I think the good thing is that it seems like people are still coming to see the play, and it means that names like Heidi Schreck and Taylor Mack get recognized, who are two of my favorite playwrights, who are both having their first year on Broadway. And I think there's enough pie for everybody. You know, we're doing great at the box office, and so many people that were a part of the production were recognized. But, of course, the truth is that none of us would be here if it weren't for Aaron Sorkin. So, our nomination is his nomination."

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Gideon Glick/Actor:
"I think it was important to the entire company. I think we understood how important it was to the nation, and the show - the piece itself is from the 60s looking back on the30s, and it has a self-reflective element to it. Now, it's 2019 looking back on the 60s looking back on the 30s, and to cull what was relevant then, and make it relevant now has been, I think, the most… it's disheartening for audiences but it's also cathartic and it shows how much work we still have to do as a nation."

STORYLINE:
JEFF DANIELS CALLS PLAYING ATTICUS FINCH IN 'MOCKINGBIRD' THE ROLE OF A LIFETIME
Early in the morning on a two-show day, Jeff Daniels reluctantly talks about his Tony nomination.
He doesn't want to get his hopes up, so he prefers to "remain neutral" on the nod. As for the role that got him there, well, that's another story. Daniels perks up when the conversation turns to the ethos surrounding his portrayal of Atticus Finch, the small-town attorney immortalized in Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird," the subsequent film, and now, the groundbreaking Broadway adaptation by Aaron Sorkin.
Lee chronicled the innocence and tragedy of her childhood in the classic novel, making a powerful statement that shined a light on the Jim Crow-era south and injustice in a small Alabama town.
Nearly sixty years after novel was published, Daniels sees the play embraces the same values.
"I think the big thing that it did in the 60s, that it also does now is it slaps white America in the face," Daniels said.
The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for literature in 1961, and the next year, the film version took home three Oscars, including a best actor win for Gregory Peck.
That pedigree makes stepping into the shoes of Atticus Finch a daunting task, one that required a healthy balance of research for Daniels.
"I watched the movie once, and then put it away. I read the book once, and again with highlighting Atticus's stuff," Daniels said.
That was just the starting point. From there, Daniels immersed himself in understanding 1930s-era Alabama so he could focus on the period, rather than imitating Gregory Peck.
"We took the approach that we were originating the role, which you know, it was a play based on the books, so in essence we are originating the role in the play version. So, we made that decision early on… I wasn't suddenly climbing Mount Gregory Peck anymore."
Taking place in the mid-1930s, "To Kill a Mockingbird" tells the story of Finch, the small-town attorney appointed by a Maycomb County judge to defend Tom Robinson, an African American man falsely accused of raping a white woman. Finch, and his children Scout and Jem, are ostracized by the racist element of the community for representing Robinson.
Eight times a week, Daniels feels the pulse of the play in front of a live audience, and while Jim Crow laws have gone by the wayside, the story is still relevant today when it comes to the conversation on racial bigotry.
"It's a wake-up call that we need less now. It's probably as pronounced as racism has been in decades. But we still need a reminder that - we have to decide whether there is goodness in everyone. Whether there is compassion and generosity and civility and respect for others in everyone. Atticus believes that, and he comes to find out that that may not be the case. And I think as we look around today, that's an arguable point," he said.
Daniels sees the stage as the perfect place to keep the conversation alive, especially because the energy of the audience differs with each performance.
"I think the American theater has an opportunity to speak in a very loud voice at times, and 'To Kill a Mockingbird,' the play, does that. There's entertainment, there's art, and then there's changing people. And that's what 'Mockingbird' does. I see it every single night," he said.
That makes playing Atticus Finch an extraordinary experience for Daniels.
"It's the role of a lifetime, and all I'm trying to do is give the performance of my life every night. Because I know what I got. I know how precious this role, and that's why I said yes to it for a year," Daniels said.
Celia Keenan-Bolger values her role with the same veracity.
"I think Scout Finch is the greatest literary heroine of all time. So, you feel like, 'Don't mess this up,'" Keenan-Bolger said.
She earned another of the play's nine nominations.
Noticeably absent from a Tony nomination was the play itself, a situation that Keenan-Bolger sees as the glass being half-full.
"Of course, I want our show to be nominated for everything and I think the good thing is that people are still coming to see the play, and it means that names like Heidi Schreck and Taylor Mack get recognized _ who are two of my favorite playwrights _ who are both having their first year on Broadway. I think there's enough pie for everybody," she said.
And what about Aaron Sorkin not getting a nod, either?
"We're doing great at the box office, and so many people that were a part of the production were recognized. But, of course, the truth is that none of us would be here if it weren't for Aaron Sorkin. So, our nomination is his nomination," Keenan-Bolger said.
Gideon Glick, who plays Jem, spoke of proudly of the responsibility of getting this play in front of audience every night.
"I think it was important to the entire company. I think we understood how important it was to the nation, and the show - the piece itself is from the sixties looking back on the thirties, and it has a self-reflective element to it. Now, it's 2019 looking back on the sixties looking back on the thirties, and to cull what was relevant then, and make it relevant now."
"To Kill a Mockingbird" is currently playing at the New York's Shubert Theatre.
The Tony Awards take place June 9 in New York.
