భారత ఆర్మీ చీఫ్ జనరల్ బిపిన్ రావత్ చీఫ్స్ ఆఫ్ స్టాఫ్ కమిటీ ఛైర్మన్గా నేడు బాధ్యతలు స్వీకరించనున్నారు. భారత వాయుసేన ఎయిర్ చీఫ్ మార్షల్ బీఎస్ ధనోవా పదవీకాలం ఈ నెలాఖరులోగా ముగియనుండగా తన బాధ్యతలను ఆయన నేడు రావత్కు అప్పగించనున్నారు.
చీఫ్స్ ఆఫ్ స్టాఫ్ కమిటీలో త్రివిధ దళాల చీఫ్‌లు సభ్యులుగా ఉంటారు. వారిలో అత్యంత సీనియర్‌ను కమిటీకి ఛైర్మన్గా నియమిస్తారు. త్రివిధ దళాల మధ్య సమన్వయం సహా దేశభద్రత విషయంలో ఎదురయ్యే సవాళ్లను సంయుక్తంగా ఎదుర్కొనే అంశంలో కమిటీ ఛైర్మన్ కీలకంగా వ్యవహరిస్తారు.
ఈ కమిటీ ఛైర్మన్గా మార్షల్ ధనోవా మే 29న అప్పటి నావికాదళ చీఫ్ అడ్మిరల్ సునీల్ లంబా నుంచి బాధ్యతలు స్వీకరించారు. 2016 డిసెంబర్ 31న ఆర్మీ చీఫ్‌గా నియమితులైన జనరల్ బిపిన్ రావత్ డిసెంబర్ 31న పదవీ విరమణ పొందనున్నారు.

I just think that's nuts. This is the important part of prevent, of protecting national security. In order, we just can't bring people in and automatically wave a magic wand or put holy water on them to give them a security clearance. It is a matter of vetting."

STORYLINE:
Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire says "I anticipated having to sit in front of some committee sometime to discuss it," when asked during a House Intelligence Committee hearing if he was "shocked" about what he read in the whistleblower complaint.
Maguire is facing questions over his handling of the complaint. A declassified version of the complaint was released Thursday before the hearing.
The complaint details a call between Trump and Ukraine's president in which Trump pressures the leader to investigate political rival Joe Biden and efforts the whistleblower says by the White House to suppress the transcript.
Trump has denied doing anything wrong.
Utah Republican Rep. Chris Stewart did not question Maguire on the substance of the complaint, but rather show that the Acting director was just doing his job.
"It's clear that he felt there's a discrepancy, a potential deficiency in the law, he was trying to do the right thing," said Stewart.
"He felt compelled by the law to do exactly what he did. And yet the entire tone here is that somehow you're a political stooge who has done nothing but try to protect the president. I just think that's nuts."
Another topic that was in the complaint focuses on Rudy Giuliani, the president's personal lawyer.
It says that multiple U.S. officials reported that Giuliani traveled to Madrid one week after the call to meet with one of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's advisers, and that the meeting was characterized as a follow-up to the telephone conversation between the two leaders.
Indiana Democrat Rep. Mike Quigley asked about clearances and whether Giuliana had any to be part of such discussions with Ukraine.
"I'm neither aware or unaware whether or not Mr. Giuliani has a security clearance," said Maguire.
And he went further to answer if he had "any issues with civilians without approval, without vetting without clearance, taking on those roles?"
"In order to be able to handle sensitive information whether it be diplomatic or certainly intelligence information, one must be vetted," said Maguire.
