"The situation with the fires in the regions of Siberia and we should note also in the far east and the Urals is developing negatively in accordance with the forecast of the Antistikhiya centre (Russian weather monitoring agency) in the spring of this year. The area affected by the fires has increased because of the dry weather we've been having for a long time and a failure to take active measures in extinguishing the majority of hot beds of fires including those located in remote areas."

STORYLINE:
More emergency service workers were deployed on Thursday to areas affected by massive forest fires in Siberia and Russia's far east.
On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Russia's military to join efforts to fight forest fires that have engulfed nearly 30,000 square kilometers of the country's territory.
Russian authorities have declared a state of emergency in five areas, including all of the Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk regions, which lie north of Mongolia.
Siberia's Krasnoyarsk region, which stretches all the way to the Kara Sea and the Arctic Ocean, can be seen blanketed in smoke by satellite photos from NASA and Europe's Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS).
Commenting on the causes of the fires, the deputy chief of the Russian Emergencies Ministry's disaster management centre, Sergey Abanin, said the area affected by the fires has increased because of the dry weather.
"We've been having for a long time and a failure to take active measures in extinguishing the majority of hot beds of fires including those located in remote areas," Abanin added.
Avialesookhrana, Russia's agency for aerial forest fire fighting, said Wednesday that about 28,000 square kilometers of the fires are in difficult-to-reach areas and are not being fought because the cost and risk of doing so is higher than the potential damage that could be caused to the unpopulated areas.
No injuries or evacuations have been reported so far from the fires, many of which appear to have been started by lightning strikes in "dry thunderstorms" in which precipitation disperses before reaching the ground.
Meteorologists say rain is expected in some of the burning areas, but not enough to put out the fires, state news agency Tass reported.
