6. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Ding Jianlong, president, Guangzhou Railway Group (partially overlaid with shot 7/ending with shot 8):
"Their settlement system is different with ours, so it would be quite difficult when we want to settle the accounts. From state-level authorities, such as the Ministry of Transportation, to local authorities of Guangdong and Guangzhou, we are all working on this issue and want to realize holistic systems and standards as soon as possible. The administrative barriers between different cities must be removed, your train drives into my city, my train goes into your city, this exchange will be normal in the future, but the questions are: who is in charge of the (infrastructural) construction, who runs the transit system, and how to divide its costs and profits? If we can have these issues addressed in the Greater Bay Area, then we can fabricate a transport network through which one can travel to different cities with one ticket. These cities can be connected by rail transportation in an integrated and orderly fashion."

China's southern province of Guangdong is exploring a way to break administrative barriers to provide an integrated public transport service to inter-city commuters in the province.
The idea is to improve the transport connectivity in China's Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, a national strategy to boost integrated development in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
The demand of an integrated ticketing service was first put forth by commuters taking the country's first inter-city subway that connects Guangdong's provincial capital Guangzhou City and neighboring Foshan City.
The subway has quickly become an important public transit channel since its opening in 2010, with daily ticket sales reaching an average of 478,000 by the end of 2018.
Many regard the subway a case of successful facilitation for inter-city transport connectivity, however, commuters are now looking forward to a ticketing service that enables them to switch between subway, high-speed train, and light rail transit lines in Guangzhou and Foshan with just one ticket.
"We will not need to stop for buying tickets, repeatedly buying tickets to switch between different transport systems. We can also avoid waiting in lines, because you can't always be the first one coming to the ticket counter, it also takes time to verify information," said Wang, a Guangzhou resident.
Building the subway itself has already marked a major removal of the administrative barriers between two different cities in multiple fields, including the subway's design, ticketing system, fare collection and distribution mechanism.
With this achievement, authorities are confident in exploring a new ticketing service that integrates the two cities' mass transit systems.
"One takes subway to travel between cities, and then switch between inter-city rails and subway. If we can have everything set in the planning phase, and then overcome the technical difficulties, it can be realized, even a connection with the high-speed trains is not impossible," said Ding Jianlong, president of Guangzhou Railway Group.
However, the "one ticket" service still entails more breakthroughs to integrate the two cities' networks, technologies and management models, said Ding, adding that among them building a holistic management model takes a lot of coordination and efforts from the two cities' authorities.
These cities can be connected by rail transportation in an integrated and orderly fashion," said Ding.
The latest progress in building such a transport network in the Greater Bay Area is Guangzhou's newly released three-year action plan that aims to build a 120 billion yuan (17.87 billion U.S. dollar) -worth rail transport industry by 2021, according to Ding.
