3. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Vasyl Terteka, Electric car constructor and owner:
"I bought a used electric bike and re-made it: fixed the engine, changed the accumulator. And I did it all because I wanted to use it to go to my apiary (place where beehives are kept), which is 25 kilometres from here. But it was a bit hard to drive such distances on a bike, I'm not getting any younger. So I decided to construct a little electric car. At least no wind is blowing into your face and no rain is pouring on your head - much better than the bike."

6. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Vasyl Terteka, Electric car constructor and owner:
"I had no drawings or plans. I simply started making the front suspension part, and then slowly, little by little, I made the carcass. I left enough space here in front to fit in the accumulators, to make sure all the weight doesn't fall on the back of the car because there would be passengers too. I then tested what I had put together and only afterwards started covering it in polycarbonate plates."

11. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Vasyl Terteka, Electric car construct and owner:
"People didn't believe something like this could be done, but I am a stubborn man. I just had to do it if I had this thought, whatever it would cost me. Because I simply needed it (an electric car). Diesel is very expensive these days, and so is fixing a normal car. While this… it takes me 45 minutes to drive 25 kilometres., and that's considering that the road is not very good there. Now that they are working on improving the road quality it's likely to become even faster! I'm perfectly happy with this (car)."
12. Various of Terteka giving a ride to his friend Mykola Muzyka in his electric car
13. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Mykola Muzyka, Vasyl Terteka's friend:
"It's a normal car which drives normally. I completely support the idea that people should switch to such electric cars, because it's very smart and cheap. Think about how much diesel or oil one spends on similar trips!"
14. Tracking through window of Terteka driving his electric car through the town
15. Various of people looking at the car and taking photos
16. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Stepan Kalaban, Gorodok resident:
"It's neatly done and ecologically clean, no emissions at all. It's a very good car. I wish I could buy a car like this one, but I don't have enough money."
17. Various inside cabin shots of Terteka starting the car and driving through the town

19. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Melania Sosenko, Gorodok resident:
"I've been looking at it and thinking whether someone could give me one too. Very nice and comfortable, it is small and can get around here and there easily."

LEADIN
An enterprising bee keeper from a small town in Ukraine has become something of a local celebrity after making his own electric car.
Naturally, he calls it "The Bee" and uses it for the 25 kilometre drive to visit his apiary.
STORYLINE:
In his small garage in western Ukraine, Vasyl Terteka gets ready to go out for a drive in his car - but first he must unplug it!
The pensioner, already known for being a skilled inventor, built this electric car himself.
It took him just three months over the winter, after he decided he wanted an easy and affordable vehicle to drive in to his apiary 25 kilometres away.
He'd previously reconstructed an electric bike for the same purpose - but realised a small economical car would be better suited to the job:
"At least no wind is blowing into your face and no rain is pouring on your head - much better than the bike," he says.
Terteka learned the basics of electronics 40 years ago on a radio mechanics course.
Her also taught him self some extra skills, via the internet, in order to build his car.
The vehicle cost him 1,500 US Dollars to make. He says it now costs him just 10 Euro cents to drive 100 kilometres in his little car - something that would cost at least 6.7 Euros in a regular car.
Terteka did not come up with any prior plans or drawings before he made The Bee. He simply started by creating the front suspension and got all the rest of his measurements along the way.
He made the carcass of polycarbonate plates once he'd tested the car's characteristics.
He says many people thought he wouldn't be able to pull it off:
"People didn't believe something like this could be done, but I am a stubborn man. I just had to do it if I had this thought, whatever it would cost me," Terteka says.
The car is very compact, but can fit another passenger. It reaches a speed of up to 58 kilometres per hour and can go for 100 kilometres on one full charge.
It's driven by several accumulators which transfer a current to the motor wheels at the back. It has a power of less than 3 kW, so according to Ukrainian law doesn't need any state registration.
"It's a normal car which drives normally. I completely support the idea that people should switch to such electric cars, because it's very smart and cheap," says Terteka's friend Mykola Muzyka, after being taken for a spin.
Local town residents love to watch Terteka's vehicle whizz by and take photos of it. Every ride attracts lots of attention and both the owner and the car are becoming local celebrities.
"I've been looking at it and thinking whether someone could give me one too. Very nice and comfortable, it is small and can get around here and there easily," says one Gorodok resident, Melania Sosenko.
The inventor has been asked to sell the car multiple times, but is resolute he will not do so.
