ఒకసారి వాడిపడేసే ప్లాస్టిక్ను నిషేధిస్తున్నట్లు ప్రధానమంత్రి నరేంద్ర మోదీ స్వాతంత్య్ర దినోత్సవం వేడుకల్లో భాగంగా తెలిపారు. ప్రధాని ప్రసంగానికి ఆకర్షితుడైన ఓ యువకుడు.. ఉద్యోగాన్ని వదిలి ప్లాస్టిక్పై అవగాహన కల్పించేందుకు నడుంబిగించాడు. దేశం మొత్తం సైకిల్ యాత్ర చేపట్టాడు.

ఒక ప్రసంగం ఎంతో మందికి స్ఫూర్తినిస్తుంది. ఎన్నో పనులకు ప్రేరేపిస్తుంది. స్వాతంత్య్ర దినోత్సవం సందర్భంగా.. ఒకసారి వాడి పడేసే ప్లాస్టిక్(సింగిల్ యూజ్ ప్లాస్టిక్) నిషేధించాలంటూ ప్రధానమంత్రి నరేంద్రమోదీ ఇచ్చిన పిలుపుకు ఓ యువకుడు ఆకర్షితుడైయాడు. ప్లాస్టిక్పై ప్రజల్లో అవగాహన కల్పించాలని సంకల్పించుకున్నాడు. అనుకోవటమే తడవుగా.. యూరప్లో ఉద్యోగాన్ని వదులుకొని స్వదేశానికి తిరిగొచ్చి దేశవ్యాప్తంగా సైకిల్ యాత్ర చేపట్టాడు. ఆయనే.. గుజరాత్కు చెందిన బ్రజేశ్ కుమార్.

గాంధీనగర్ నుంచి..

స్వరాష్ట్రం గుజరాత్లోని గాంధీనగర్ నుంచి ఈ ఏడాది సెప్టెంబర్ 17న సైకిల్ యాత్రను ప్రారంభించాడు బ్రజేశ్. సుమారు 23వేల కిలోమీటర్ల మేర ప్రయాణం చేసి ప్రజల్లో అవగాహన కల్పించాలనే లక్ష్యంతో యాత్రను ఆరంభించాడు.

"పాఠశాలలు, కళాశాలలు, విశ్వవిద్యాలయాలకు వెళ్లి సింగిల్ యూజ్ ప్లాస్టిక్ రహిత భారత్పై అవగాహన కల్పిస్తున్నా. ఒకసారి వాడి పడేసే ప్లాస్టిక్ వల్ల పర్యావరణానికి వాటిల్లుతున్న హాని గురించి ప్రచారం చేస్తున్నాను. ప్లాస్టిక్ వదిలేయాలని విద్యార్థులను ప్రోత్సహిస్తున్నా. దేశవ్యాప్తంగా ఇలాగే చేస్తాను. ఇప్పటి వరకు గుజరాత్ సౌరాష్ట్రలో 500 కి.మీ పూర్తి చేసుకుని.. అక్కడి నుంచి రాజస్థాన్, హరియాణా, దిల్లీ, మధుర బృందావన్ దాటి 46 రోజుల తర్వాత ఆగ్రా చేరుకున్నాను. ఇక్కడ కూడా ప్రజల్లో అవగాహన తీసుకొచ్చే ప్రయత్నం చేస్తాను."

25 వేల విద్యార్థులకు..

ప్లాస్టిక్ వాడకంపై విద్యార్థుల్లో అవగాహన కల్పించాలని సంకల్పించుకుని.. తాను వెళ్లే ప్రాంతాల్లోని పాఠశాలలు, కళాశాలలు, విశ్వవిద్యాలయాలను సందర్శిస్తున్నాడు బ్రజేశ్. ప్లాస్టిక్ వాడకం వల్ల వాతావరణంలో కలిగే మార్పులు, మూగ జీవాలకు కలుగుతున్న నష్టాల గురించి వివరిస్తున్నాడు. ఇప్పటి వరకు సుమారు 25 వేల విద్యార్థులకు అవగాహన కల్పించాడు.

ప్రస్తుతం ఆగ్రాలో ఉన్న బ్రజేశ్.. ప్రపంచ ప్రఖ్యాతిగాంచిన తాజ్మహాల్ వద్ద పర్యటకులకు సింగిల్ యూజ్ ప్లాస్టిక్ వల్ల కలిగే నష్టాలపై అవగాహన కల్పించాడు. అనంతరం ధౌల్పుర్, మోరెనా వెళ్లనున్నట్లు తెలిపాడు.

LEAD IN:
Less than half the sea floor of Australia's Great Barrier Reef has been comprehensively mapped.
This month the nationally funded ocean research vessel, Investigator, has been sailing north, providing researchers with an opportunity to map dramatic canyons in northeastern Australia for the first time.
STORYLINE:
Above the water, it's picture perfect.
But what lies beneath is what really intrigues scientists.
As this research vessel, the Investigator, travels north through the Coral Sea, it's constantly mapping the sea floor.
A team of people from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) are processing the data in real time - at all hours.
"It's quite nice, kind of when it's dark and no one's awake, it's actually a bit peaceful, and you can just see the mapping," says masters Student Jana Valle.
The data they are collecting is filling in the gaps in a network of deep sea canyons along the continental shelf.
"Anywhere where there's detail, is where data exists of the sea floor. And where it's a little bit fuzzy, is where we don't have any information," says Royal Australian Navy Petty Officer Hannah Lee.
Chief Scientist Robin Beaman says the canyons can go up to two kilometres deep in places.
Over the last decade, the area between the cities of Townsville and Cairns has been mostly mapped.
Now researchers are pushing north.
Understanding these canyons helps reef management, because experts can accurately predict how deep ocean water is directed over the reef.
"We can actually use that oceanographic modelling to understand which coral reefs are more likely to fare better in future coral bleaching events," says Beaman.
This investigator voyage also mapped ancient landslides where the edge of the Great Barrier Reef collapsed.
Researchers say these undersea collapses will happen again, though it's impossible to say when and any tsunami effect would be minimal.
"So we could probably feel a tsunami on the coastline but it's very, very reduced because of the effectiveness of coral reefs to just dampen that energy," says Beaman.
In just a decade scientists have learned a lot about the coral sea floor, but they don't know what is living in it's dramatic depths.
The next frontier for discovery.
