Guests from home and abroad affirmed the positive effect of China's opening-up via its Belt and Road Initiative and world development after listening to Chinese President Xi Jinping's keynote speech delivered in Beijing on Friday.
The speech was made at the opening ceremony of the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF), which is scheduled to last from April 25-27 in Beijing.
During the speech, Xi announced a series of measures for the country's higher-level opening-up to promote high-quality economic development and to contribute to world peace, stability and development.
"President Xi more clearly announced to the world some of our new ideas for the Belt and Road Initiative and the need to improve in some areas, such as governance, transparency, standards and green development. China's reform and opening-up will bring benefits not only to the Chinese people, but also to other countries that are willing to cooperate with us," said Jin Liqun, president of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank.
Xi said that in the future, China will expand market access for foreign investment to a wider range, make greater efforts to strengthen international cooperation in intellectual property rights (IPR) protection, increase imports on a larger scale, coordinate international macroeconomic policies more effectively and pay more attention to the implementation of the opening-up policy.
"It is really important to have win-win outcomes from this initiative for all the participating countries, which is really important for the country like Georgia with the small economy. It doesn't matter whether it is small economy or big economies, they can benefit equally," said Genady Arveladze, deputy minister of Georgia's economy and sustainable development.
George Tzogopoulos, a senior research fellow with the Center International de Formation Europeenne (CIFE) and an expert in Chinese affairs, agreed that these concrete measures of opening-up will set the course and add new vitality for the further development of the Belt and Road Initiative, where trade is crucial.
"In the opening ceremony, he (Xi) said again that China is interested in importing more products from the world. Now it's the responsibility for European countries to improve the quality of their products because the Chinese market is open and the second Shanghai forum to take place this November will be another chance for European countries to realize existing chances and to look at ways in order to improve their quality of their products and increase their exports to China," said Tzogopoulos.
According to Ruan Zongze, executive vice president of the China Institute of International Studies, the Belt and Road Initiative will surely promote world economic growth alongside China's higher-level opening-up.
"China is more open now, which also benefits the world economy. And the further prosperity of the global economy will then provide a very good external environment for China's greater opening-up and higher-quality development. Therefore, China and the world are mutually dependent nowadays," he said.
Armida Salsiah Alisjahbana, executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), said that the Belt and Road Initiative will contribute to the world environmental governance and it is also helpful for the fulfillment of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
"Especially, I take note on President Xi Jinping also commitment especially to align the BRI, the Belt and Road Initiative, with the sustainable development goals of the 2030 Agenda. So the alignment and how BRI, Belt and Road Initiative, has the potential to support the realization of the Agenda 2030," said Alisjahbana.
The three-day forum is set to be attended by 37 heads of state and government and gather some 5,000 delegates from over 150 countries and 90 international organizations in the Chinese capital.
