"I think (Israeli Prime Minister) Benjamin Netanyahu has done a lot for the country. He is the son of this country. He served this country as a soldier, as an officer. His brother was killed. He has served in public life for more than two decades and 13 years as prime minister, but as we say, enough is enough."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Professor Reuven Hazan, Department of Political Science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem:
"Gantz's strength is that he is a former head of the army, he is a military hero, he is a household name, he is tall, he looks good, he comes across well, he is clean, he doesn't have years of politics or scandals behind him. His negative element is that he is not a politician, and he jumped in to these elections, he has made statements that he has contradicted, he has brought parties together who aren't really working well together, their campaign is quite flat, they haven't been able to galvanise voters. In other words there are things that work for him, things that work against him, and Netanyahu, who is a great campaigner and a superb politician, is picking at all of his weaknesses and trying to diminish whatever positive elements Gantz has."

He's a hearty person, he's a nice guy, he's a magic person that really succeeded, we wish him all the best and good luck because the State of Israel needs a change."

I think that today with the political spectrum that we have, there must be people, people with integrity, with a little bit of reliability, with responsibility, with a mission. The man is a missionary, he gave all his years, he has a very nice ID behind him and I think he is proper, very proper."
14. SOUNDBITE (Hebrew) Yafim Chaklovsky, resident of Rosh Haayin:
"We don't see that he has an ego, he is someone who looks eye to eye. Some people look down or look the other side. He is a nice guy, straight, lots of respect to him, good luck to him on becoming our prime minister."

(Off camera journalist question: Do you see him around?)
"In the past I was seeing him running, and today a little less, I presume he is running in another way, his own way now. In the past he was constantly running here in the mornings so we were meeting sometimes, yes."

STORYLINE:
The main challenger to the decade-long reign of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel's upcoming election is retired army chief, Benny Gantz.
Gantz burst onto the political scene just a few months ago, offering himself as an honest alternative to the scandal-plagued Netanyahu and his narrow coalition of ultranationalist and ultra-religious parties.
He joined forces with popular politician Yair Lapid, head of Yesh Atid party, and forged a new centrist party, Blue and White, made up of other former military officers.
With just a week before the Israeli election, some snap polls show the telegenic military hero neck-and-neck with Netanyahu.
Recent polls have placed Gantz's Blue and White party ahead of Likud.
Gantz's campaign has emphasised the three-star general's top-notch security credentials - an attractive quality to the Israeli electorate.
But anything can happen in this turbulent election season, and on Tuesday night Israeli Channel 13's poll predicted that Netanyahu's party will overtake Gantz's party.
Gantz has campaigned on his clean record and military pedigree, proclaiming that Israel has "lost its way," pledging to combat corruption and professing his devotion to state institutions that Netanyahu has assailed.
According to Reuven Hazan, a political sciences professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Gantz has many qualities that appeal to voters but "his negative element is that he is not a politician".
"Netanyahu, who is a great campaigner and a superb politician, is picking at all of his weaknesses and trying to diminish whatever positive elements Gantz has," Hazan added.
Gantz has kept his platform vague, aimed at broad swaths of political moderates.
In his home city of Rosh Haayin, Gantz has a loyal following, with neighbours and local residents considering him a "nice guy", "very human and a good friend".
But in Jerusalem, people question his suitability to run the country, citing his lack of political experience.
Gantz may be able to exploit Netanyahu's vulnerabilities, but it's unclear if that will be enough to oust the only leader Israel has known for ten years.
