STORYLINE:
Leading European Parliament candidates of Hungary's left-wing and green coalition asked for support from Hungarian voters to defeat Europe's nationalist and populist forces in Sunday's election.
The coalition of the Socialist Party and the Green Dialogue for Hungary party is vying for second place in the EU parliament election, as right-wing populist Prime Minister Viktor Orban's Fidesz party is expected to win up to 14 of Hungary's 21 seats in the EU legislature.
Bertalan Toth, chairman and leading European Parliament candidate of the opposition Socialist Party, warned that the far-right parties in Europe want to follow Orban's example.
Since his return to power in 2010, Orban has been criticized for weakening democracy, taking control of the courts and the media and benefiting allies with large state contracts.
"They want a regime in Europe like the one Viktor Orban has built here in Hungary," Toth said. "This is what we are fighting against."
Benedek Javor, leading European Parliament candidate of the Green Dialogue for Hungary party, said the far-right would "take Europe back to the era of conflicts between nation states" and "dismantle European cooperation".
