SARPO RAKSHATI RAKSHITAHA
Vruksho Rakshati Rakshitaha. It is a common saying that trees protect us if we protect them. But, Sadasivaiah, associate professor in Botany from Mahabubnagar district urges us to save snakes which in turn protect our nature. He is relentlessly working for 10 years towards saving snakes, environment and biodiversity. Once upon a time, he killed a snake out of fear but later, decided against it. From then on, he saved about 2000 snakes. In order to save snakes and people from snakebites, he established Association for Biodiversity Conservation and Development (ABCD) foundation.
Everyone is afraid of snakes regardless of their size. Whether they’re venomous or not, we tend to run away. Or, out of fear, we kill them. But Professor Sadasivaiah urges not to kill the snakes. Sadasivaiah, who hails from Kuntimaddi of Anantapur district is working as Associate Professor, Botany in Burgula Ramakrishnarao government college in Jadcherla, Mahabubnagar district. While he was studying PhD, he killed a snake out of fear. But later, he vowed to never repeat the act. After PhD, as a part of his Post-Doctoral studies, he had to do research in Botany and Zoology. He learned about snakes during this time and underwent training in snake rescue.
He started rescuing snakes since 2010. While he was studying in Krishnadevaraya university, he publicized his phone number across and asked people to call him if they spot a snake. People from neighbouring villages used to call him whenever they came across a snake. Later, he started working as lecturer in Wanaparthy. He continued the same trend there also. He rescued snakes within 30 km radius of Wanaparthy. Venomous snakes like Cobras, Vipers and Boas, heavy bodied ones like Pythons and non-venomous ones like Whipsnakes; he rescued them all.
He felt that merely rescuing is not enough. So, he decided to educate people about snakes. In order to create awareness, he takes some of the rescued snakes to schools. He teaches the students about the types of snakes, how to identify the venomous ones and how to protect oneself from snakebite. He helps burst myths about snakes and puts across facts. Till now, he has conducted such awareness programs in more than 630 schools.
He realized that this rescue operation shouldn’t end with him. So, he started training enthusiastic youngsters, students and environment lovers in catching snakes through his ABCD foundation. Anybody who wants to do their part for the nature can join this organization free of cost. This foundation has members across Telangana. ABCD doesn’t charge a penny for rescuing snakes. But they made it a rule to gift two saplings to those who rescue snakes. Being a gazetted officer, Sadasivaiah put forth a condition to everyone who comes for his signature, that is to gift him two saplings. The ABCD members have planted all those collected saplings in the college premises.
Sadasivaiah asserts that snakes don’t harm us if we don’t intimidate them. Besides, he reminds us that snake venom is used in preparing many medicines. He maintains that the food chain and biodiversity will be affected without snakes. He pleads with people to not go to quacks in the event of a snake bite. He is confident that we can put an end to snakebite deaths in few years if forest and health departments take proper measures.
Right now, there are umpteen people trained by Sadasivaiah who are doing their best for the environment. Many others are inspired by his deeds. He wants to educate more people about these causes in order to achieve Haritha Telangana.
