And I'm like: 'You can open it now or you can open it later'. He loved presents, and I loved to surprise him with stuff. Of course he opened it right away. And he just sat there, 'cause I had framed it, just sat there with the photo frame in his hand, just staring. And he turns around, he has tears rolling down his face and asks if I'm serious. It was the first time I'd seen him cry in seven years we've been together."

STORYLINE:
Two months after US Army Sergeant James Johnston was killed in Afghanistan, his adopted hometown of Trumansburg in upstate New York gathered to pay tribute, and to say goodbye.
Krista Johnston, his 24-year-old widow, wore her husband's favorite blue-and-pink Hawaiian shirt; it seemed too big even over her pregnant belly.
At the American Legion hall, she watched the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps and the presentation of a flag from the US Capitol.
The next day, the hall was transformed for a baby shower with towering piles of gifts amid pink and blue balloons for a daughter her husband will never meet.
"It's really taken a lot to process. But it's a blessing. She's a blessing. And everybody here has been amazing," Krista Johnston says.
The back-to-back ceremonies in rural Trumansburg, marking death and life, reflected the relentless toll of Afghanistan fighting.
Some 2,300 American have been killed in Afghanistan since 2001, in a war that's now the nation's longest.
Though the recent cancellation of peace talks between the US and the Taliban has attracted headlines, Afghanistan's war has long been relegated to news briefs.
The youngest enlistees weren't even born 18 years ago when the US invaded Afghanistan and the hunt began for Osama bin Laden.
And the bloodshed seems far distant - unless it claims a son, a friend, a lover.
James Gregory Johnston, an explosive ordnance disposal specialist, was killed on 25 June in Uruzgan Province in south-central Afghanistan.
He was seven years old when the war began 18 years ago - and had wanted to be in the military since he was a boy.
As a toddler, he'd play in the sweltery Texas summers in cargo shorts and heavy-duty camouflage, digging foxholes in his front yard.
His mother recalls he once asked to have a toy driver's license created for him with the designation "Special Forces" and code name "Silver Falcon".
His career path had never been in doubt.
He told everyone he met after moving to New York - Johnston' father, then a paramedic, had relocated there - that he planned to enlist after high school.
"His last words to me were, he says, 'Dad, if I have to die, I want to die in battle,'" his father-in-law, Fred VanDerzee, says.
Johnston may not have lived in Trumansburg long, but he'd gone to high school there and married the sweetheart he met there and he had quickly adopted the rituals and rhythms of small-town life.
He was No. 55, a tenacious lineman for the Trumansburg Blue Raiders, taking the field under the Friday night lights.
He was the gung-ho volunteer firefighter.
He was JJ, Jamie or Texas, a nickname he'd acquired because he constantly boasted about his roots.
He also was the loyal friend, the comic relief, the Hawaiian shirt aficionado, the blisteringly honest high school sweetheart-turned-husband of Krista.
Krista was taken in by his easy smile, his jokes, his courtly Southern manner; he first called her Miss Krista and opened doors for her.
Johnston found out he was going to be a father in March, the day before he deployed to Afghanistan.
"I print out a sign that says: Boyfriend 2012, Fiance 2014, Husband 2014 and then Father 2019 … He just sat there with the photo frame in his hand just staring. And he turns around he has tears rolling down his face and asks if I'm serious," his widow recalls.
"It was the first time I'd seen him cry in seven years we've been together."
Nine weeks later, she told Johnston they'd be having a girl.
He started pondering post-military life and talked with his mother about joining her charter fishing operation, even though he wasn't crazy about fishing.
He called his father-in-law to discuss possible business ventures.
On 25 June, the Johnstons did what they'd done since he had arrived in Afghanistan.
He messaged her that he'd be going on an operation. "Be safe. I love you," she'd responded, and she awaited word that he had returned safely.
This time, there was silence.
Johnston and Master Sergeant Micheal Riley, a Green Beret, were killed in combat; the military said they died from injuries sustained in small arms fire, but did not elaborate.
On the eve of the baby shower, people wearing Hawaiian shirts packed a fundraiser at the American Legion in Trumansburg, in tribute to Johnston, who loved the colourful shirts.
"I needed to make sure that he was honored and I needed to make sure that Krista and baby Jamie are honored, and that the community realizes the sacrifices this family has made," explains Ashley Percey, a friend who considers Johnston a brother.
The baby is due in November.
Friends and family plan to assemble a book of stories and photos that will help her learn about the man she'll never meet.
Krista Johnston hopes she'll have her husband's freckles and dark brown eyes and has decided to name her Jamie, after her dad.
She says she'll be guided by her husband 's words after a friend, also an explosive specialist, was killed in Afghanistan last year.
He vowed then to focus on his buddy's life, not his death.
