STORYLINE:
Families of victims of drug related killings in the Philippines held a mass on Tuesday in Manila after Amnesty International urgently called for international pressure and an immediate UN investigation to help end what it says are possible crimes against humanity.
The London-based rights watchdog said in a study released Monday that extrajudicial killings in Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte's three-year-old campaign remain rampant and the scale of abuses has reached "the threshold of crimes against humanity."
About 6,600 people, most of them accused of petty drug crimes, have been killed in the crackdown Duterte launched as his centrepiece project when he took office in mid-2016.
But non-government groups claim a much higher death toll, including many suspects killed by motorcycle-riding gunmen human rights groups suspect were financed by police officers.
Holding photos of their loved ones, families and advocates marched outside the Commission on Human Rights office in Manila chanting "stop the killings, fight for justice".
"We the families are calling on the United Nations Human Rights Council to vote in favour of the proposed independent investigation," said Kathy Bautista, stepmother of John David, a victim of extrajudicial killing in 2017.
"Here in the Philippines we don't feel that we can have the justice that we hoped for," she added,
There was no immediate government reaction to Amnesty's report but Duterte and the police have denied any authorisation of extrajudicial killings.
Philippine Commission on Human Rights chairperson Chito Gascon called on the country's government "to do all they can to show the international community that we are prepared to meet international human rights standards."
Amnesty International has asked an International Criminal Court prosecutor to hasten the examination of complaints sparked by the massive deaths for The Hague-based tribunal to open a separate investigation.
Iceland has submitted a draft resolution to the 47-state Human Rights Council asking the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to prepare a comprehensive report on human rights in the Philippines and calling on the Duterte administration to facilitate visits by UN rights experts and refrain "from all acts of intimidation."
Duterte has opposed any visit by UN investigators.
