++EDIT ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++
1. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler prepares to speak with reporters
2. SOUNDBITE: (English) Rep. Jerrold Nadler, (D) New York:
"The failure of Attorney General Barr to come to the hearing today is simply another step in the administration's growing attack on American democracy and its attack on the right of Congress to be a coordinated branch of government and to have the information it needs to legislate and act on behalf of the American people."
3. Various of Nadler
4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Rep. Jerrold Nadler, (D) New York:
"We will make one more good faith attempt to negotiate and to get the access to the report that we need and then and then if we don't get that we will proceed to hold the attorney general in contempt and then we'll go from there."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Rep. Steve Cohen, (D) Tennessee:
"Chicken Barr should have shown up today and answered questions. He was afraid of Barry Berke. He was afraid of Norm Eisen (consulting counsels to House Judiciary Committee.) A attorney general who was picked for his legal acumen and his abilities would not be fearful of any other attorneys questioning him for 30 minutes."

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Rep. Val Demings (D) Florida:
"You know I just have to say as a former police chief that it was painful and disgraceful to see the nation's top cop abandon his responsibilities to allow an empty chair to speak for him this morning."
9. Various of Rep. Doug Collins
10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Rep. Doug Collins, (R) Georgia:
"What we've seen this morning is another -- just a lot of circus the stunts that the committee chairman has chosen. Today the committee chairman took away the ability of the Republicans and Democrats to question the attorney general who voluntarily, willingly was going to come today and answer questions of great concern to the country. The problem I have today is that the chairman has decided political stunts are more important than actually having the attorney general here. We'll continue to watch what he's doing. But it is a shame to me that the committee in the majority is running roughshod over the minority rights but also running roughshod over the American people and not even taking the accommodations that the attorney general has made him. And we understand that then we understand that maybe it's the Democrats who have something to be worried about. Maybe they don't like what was in the Muller report and maybe they don't want to continue to have to answer questions about it."
STORYLINE:
Attorney General William Barr skipped a House hearing Thursday on special counsel Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia report, escalating an already acrimonious battle between Democrats and President Donald Trump's Justice Department.
Barr's decision, made after a disagreement with a House committee over questioning, came the day the department also missed a committee deadline to provide it with a full, unredacted version of Mueller's report and its underlying evidence.
In all, it's likely to prompt a vote on holding Barr in contempt and possibly the issuance of subpoenas, bringing House Democrats and the Trump administration closer to a prolonged battle in court.
It's unclear whether Barr will eventually negotiate an appearance with the House panel.
Nadler said he would not issue a subpoena for Barr's appearance on Thursday but would first focus on getting the full Mueller report, likely including a vote holding Barr in contempt of Congress.
