"We had this idea, to bring back Leonardo's earliest known landscape drawing which is actually one of the earliest landscape drawings in the Renaissance, in the history of mankind, to bring it back to the place where he was born, to Vinci, and today it's his birthday so it's the right opportunity to celebrate this with the opening of the exhibition dedicated to this very very famous drawing."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Eike D. Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries and art historian:
"What is very very clear is actually two things: number one, it is very very much like the landscape around vinci, around the town where Leonardo was born and grew up and where he returned when he lived in Florence regularly. So there is a certainty likelihood that he had that in mind and that he may had set down on his trips to make some drawings but the second thing that we now know thanks to a scientific analysis with modern technology with a nuclear X-ray fluorescence analysis of it, is that Leonardo made two drawings, he first made one drawing and then in a separate moment, perhaps a few days later, perhaps a year later, he added to it."

12. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Roberta Barsanti, director of Leonardo Museum and curator of the exhibition:
"This exhibition, "Leonardo a Vinci. Alle origini del genio" ("Back to the origins of the genius. Leonardo's birthplace"), is extremely important because it is an exhibition that celebrates, in the year of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo's death, the most renowned citizen of Vinci, Leonardo da Vinci, and is celebrated in his hometown with an exhibition that shows the connection between Leonardo and his town and the inspirations that Leonardo drew from the town and the countryside and that accompanied him for his entire life."

"(This exhibition) wants to reaffirm this connection (between Leonardo and his hometown) through documents that are fundamental in order to recreate his childhood, his youth and that were lent to us by the State Archive of Florence, and also through an important drawing, the "Landscape", so famous that is known only by its inventory number, 8P, and that has been kindly lent to us by the Uffizi Galleries of Florence".

"This "Paesaggio" (landscape) that was very much inspired by Leonardo's homeland, from a geographic point of view we can recognise many elements, but this landscape has been relived, recomposed through the eye of the artist so much as to become an ideal landscape where Leonardo already seems very attracted by the representation of natural phenomena, of that world of nature to which he will dedicate so many studies in the following years."

LEADIN
An important amd rarely seen drawing by Leonardo da Vinci is on display in his hometown to celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death.
The artwork known as "The Landscape", is thought to be the very first drawing by Leonardo and has confirmed that the artist was ambidextrous.
STORYLINE:
The exhibition here at the "Museo Leonardiano" of Vinci, near Florence, is to mark 500 years since the death of Leonardo da Vinci, in 1519.
The artist was born in Anchiano, a tiny hamlet near Vinci (in the province of Florence) on April 15th, 1452.
He had a strong influence on Renaissance culture and a profound impact on the Arts, Engineering, Science and even Technology.
The exhibition hosts other documents and models showing the connection between Leonardo and his hometown, such as a notarial deed where Leonardo's grandfather wrote down his grandson's date of birth.
The main artwork on display is the drawing "8P" (which is its inventory number), known as "The Landscape" ("Il Paesaggio" in Italian): this is the very first drawing by Leonardo that we know of.
The drawing depicts a bucolic scene, with a castle on a hill in the background and a valley dominating the center of the artwork.
On the back, there is a sketch of a landscape and other figures.
"We had this idea, to bring back Leonardo's earliest known landscape drawing which is actually one of the earliest landscape drawings in the Renaissance, in the history of mankind, to bring it back to the place where he was born, to Vinci, and today it's his birthday so it's the right opportunity to celebrate this with the opening of the exhibition dedicated to this very very famous drawing" Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries, explains.
This exhibition is a very special occasion not only because the drawing is only displayed occasionally due to its fragility, but also because, for the first time, it is on view in a special showcase that allows visitors to admire both the front and the back.
"What is very very clear is actually two things: number one, it is very very much like the landscape around vinci, around the town where Leonardo was born and grew up and where he returned when he lived in Florence regularly. So there is a certainty likelihood that he had that in mind and that he may had set down on his trips to make some drawings but the second thing that we now know thanks to a scientific analysis with modern technology with a nuclear x-ray fluorescence analysis of it, is that Leonardo made two drawings, he first made one drawing and then in a separate moment, perhaps a few days later, perhaps a year later, he added to it," Schmidt explains.
The drawing is part of the Uffizi Galleries collection in Florence.
It was moved this year to Opificio Delle Pietre Dure in Florence - one of the oldest institutes devoted to the preservation and restoration of art - to be examined using modern and non-invasive technologies.
Thanks to this in-depth look at the art work, that also used ultra-light technologies, researchers have made other interesting discoveries about this drawing.
"What is very very clear is actually two things: number one, it is very very much like the landscape around Vinci, around the town where Leonardo was born and grew up and where he returned when he lived in Florence regularly, so there is a certainty likelihood that he had that in mind and that he may have set down on his trips to make some drawings but the second thing that we now know thanks to a scientific analysis with modern technology with a nuclear X-ray fluorescence analysis of it, is that Leonardo made two drawings, he first made one drawing and then in a separate moment, perhaps a few days later, perhaps a year later, he added to it" Eike Schmidt, director of the Uffizi Galleries, explains.
According to the experts, the research that was carried out has also confirmed the fact that Leonardo was ambidextrous.
Among other techniques, Opificio delle Pietre Dure used an instrument called Scanner Multi Vis/NIR, created by the National Institute of Optics of the CNR (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Italian National Research Centre) which was able to capture 32 different images of the drawing using different wavelengths.

The exhibition lasts until October 15th (2019) but the original drawing by Leonardo will be on display between April 15 and May 26 due to conservation reasons and it will then be replaced by a high-quality reproduction.
"This "Paesaggio" (landscape) that was very much inspired by Leonardo's homeland, from a geographic point of view we can recognise many elements, but this landscape has been relived, recomposed through the eye of the artist so much as to become an ideal landscape where Leonardo already seems very attracted by the representation of natural phenomena, of that world of nature to which he will dedicate so many studies in the following years," says Barsanti.
The Italian President Sergio Mattarella was at the opening of the exhibition.
Paolo Bruni a resident living in Vinci says he is proud to be a compatriot of Leonardo.
"I am so proud (that I'm from Vinci) that when I go abroad, and I have been to America, to the US, but also to Europe, Japan, and England, and someone asks me "where do you come from" and a lot of people would say "from Florence", because it is easier, but I say from Vinci, and Vinci is known everywhere because the name of Leonardo is really universal" Paolo explains.
Leonardo is known worldwide as a painter - thanks to masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and the Last Supper - but during the Renaissance, he was renowned also for his talent as an architect, engineer and observer of the nature around him.
He died on May 2nd, 1519, in Cloux (now Clos-Lucé), France.
To celebrate the 500th anniversary of his death, exhibitions and celebrations will be held in various Italian cities, such as Florence and Milan, throughout 2019.
