STORYLINE:
Some of the protesters who stormed Hong Kong's legislature on July 1st spoke to the Associated Press, explaining why they felt compelled to do so despite the risks.
Hundreds of protesters wreaked havoc inside the government complex in scenes that shocked the world. It drew swift condemnation from Hong Kong officials and leaders across the globe.
But the protesters, all in their teens and twenties, said they concluded peaceful demonstrations were pointless after the failure of Hong Kong's pro-democracy Umbrella Movement in 2014.
Daisy Chan, 19, was the coordinator of a "resource station," an informal group of about a dozen protesters who organized logistics for a series of demonstrations in Hong Kong over the past month.
Chan and three other members of their group said the government's refusals to listen to their demands and a string of protester deaths had hardened their stance and caused them to believe that damaging the Legislative Council was necessary to get officials' attention.
Over the past month, hundreds of thousands have marched against the Hong Kong government's attempt to change extradition laws to allow suspects to be sent to China for trial, reflecting worries about perceptions of eroding autonomy.
Three protesters fell to their deaths, adding to the tension.
July 1st was the 22nd anniversary of the former British colony's return to China, and the protesters were angry. They felt their demands were being ignored.

Just before noon, hundreds of protesters crowded near the government complex and voted to break in.
Chan disagreed with the break-in. The protesters were too few, she worried, and police presence was heavy. She feared someone could get hurt.

Angry protesters pushed ahead, cracking windows with carts, sledgehammers and metal barricades.
Chan said the group had "lost control" and there was no way of stopping them at that point.
Despite disagreeing with their actions, Chan felt compelled to support the other protesters.
She recalled alerting protesters when the police had retreated.
"You should get in now!" she shouted at them.
Protesters smashed the glass doors and poured into the complex, joining others who flooded in from a second breach.
Chan walked into the complex with another member of her team, 24-year-old Nick, and began scouting the second floor for police.
She then ordered her team to destroy CCTV cameras and hard drives, seize the control room and protect the library, which contained priceless historical artifacts.
Daisy and Nick say they took pains to avoid unnecessary destruction, targeting equipment that they thought could endanger other protesters while protecting valuable objects.
Some protesters tore down portraits of pro-Beijing lawmakers. They spray-painted Hong Kong's emblem black, smashed elevators, plucked cameras out of ceilings and scrawled slogans calling for free elections.
Nick and Chan say they gave up on peaceful protests after what they said was the government's rejection of their demands, as well as the failure of Hong Kong's pro-democracy Umbrella Movement, which both participated in.

After the Umbrella Movement ended, they felt that Hong Kong's autonomy continued to erode.
The government's proposed extradition amendments, which would allow Hong Kong to send suspects to China, was the last straw.
When protests erupted again this year, their resolve had hardened.
Yes, they were scared. Yes, they might get caught. But for five years they felt they had tried everything, and concluded the only tactic that worked was force.
