"Cerciello did not have his gun with him. He forgot it. He is the only one who knows why he didn't have it with him. He did have the handcuffs with him. So, it was probably that he forgot. This doesn't take anything away from the fact that he would not have had any possibility to react and so to use it, even if he had had it."

6. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Nunzia D'Elia, Prosecutor
"Certainly the boys were pretty exhausted, even physically, they demonstrated a certain…you could see there was something that was not right, so probably they had been using drugs, or alcohol or both. Later we discovered that one of them had definitely used a mix, this is Finn, let's say. Finnegan had taken drugs, he also told us, and it is also proven by the fact that we have confiscated these drugs, if I am not mistaken, and then he, himself told us that he had taken shots and beer."

8. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Nunzia D'Elia, Prosecutor

10. SOUNDBITE: (Italian) Michele Prestipino, Prosecutor:
"In the phase ahead of the official interrogation, one of the suspects had a photo taken of him while he was sitting, handcuffed with his hands behind his back and blindfolded. This fact was immediatly reported on the part of the Carabinieri themselves. The top levels of the Carabinieri at both the local and national level have described that fact as serious and unacceptable. The prosecutor's office has already opened an investigation that is necessary to understand that what has happened is a crime, and to understand all the related responsibilities."

STORYLINE
Italian authorities said Tuesday that a carabinieri police officer who was fatally stabbed during a confrontation with two American teenagers over a botched drug deal had forgotten his gun that night, but that regardless there wasn't time to fire and the suspects then fled.
Carabineri General Francesco Gargaro defended the police response during a press conference Tuesday providing the first details about the confrontation in which Deputy Brigadier Mario Cerciello Rega was fatally stabbed.
He and his partner, Andrea Varriale, had responded to the scene in downtown Rome early Friday after a man reported to police that the two Americans had stolen his bag during a drug deal and then tried to extort him to get it back.
Americans Finnegan Lee Elder, 19, and Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth, 18, were arrested early Friday in the slaying of Cerciello Rega. They were ordered held by a judge who said there were "grave" indications they were responsible for Cerciello Rega's death.
According to the judge's ruling, Elder and Natale-Hjorth had sought to buy cocaine from a drug dealer in Rome's Trastevere neighborhood and fled after paying as police approached. Police say the Americans grabbed the knapsack of the man who arranged the sale, Sergio Brugiatelli, and later arranged a rendezvous with him to try to extort him to get it back.
After Brugiatelli informed police of the extortion attempt, Cerciello Rega and Varriale, were sent to the rendezvous point.
Gargaro told reporters Tuesday that the officers identified themselves as carabinieri, but were immediately attacked by the Americans.
He said Cerciello Rega had "forgotten" his gun that night, after he had been called into service during a day off. While Varriale had his gun on him, there wasn't time to use it and that regardless, the rules of engagement for police would have prohibited him firing on fleeing suspects, Gargaro said.
Police who traced the Americans to their hotel room have said a search found the alleged weapon, an 18-centimeter (7-inch) military-style attack knife, hidden inside the room's drop ceiling.
Gargano said Tuesday that Elder had told authorities he had brought the knife with him from the United States.
