"Even though we haven't crossed the line yet, there's a great hope that we at least have a chance now to cross the line and not end up with a no-deal (Brexit). That could still happen. "They're said they're they're not supporting it now but just last week they were supporting significant elements of this, and that does concern me somewhat. But I can understand why they are not supporting it now because it does drive that wedge between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, which is dangerous for us constitutionally. We have to think of where our market is, not only constitutionally, but we have to think of where our market is. We don't want to close off the avenues between goods coming in from GB (Great Britain) to Northern Ireland and vice versa."

28. SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Elliott, former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party (on whether British Prime Minister Boris Johnson sacrificed Northern Ireland in sake of a deal):
"Well, I think he's been trying to be pragmatic and get a deal. Within that, we (unionists) happen to be one group of people who have got somewhat in his way. He's saying, well, look, probably he thinks it's a reasonable deal for us. We as unionists in Northern Ireland don't believe that. And that's just where we differ."

STORYLINE:
In the constituency of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster, businesses are breathing a sigh of relief as a new Brexit deal to be voted on Saturday could prevent a hard exit that would jeopardize jobs.
Despite a strong unionist presence here, among the business community it's practicality, and not emotion, that is the guiding principle.
With acres of logs neatly stacked, the Balcas wood mill located just ten miles from the Northern Irish border is one of the UK's largest wood product manufacturers.
The scent of freshly cut timber lingers in the air, and the rumbling sound of machinery is pieced only by the clatter of logs dropping onto the conveyor belt taking them into the plant for processing.
The company buys logs from sustainably managed forests with 60% of them coming from the Republic of Ireland.
The uncertainty of Brexit for the past three years has caused grave concern that is now starting to lift.
"The overwhelming emotion was one of relief," said Balcas CEO Brian Murphy of the new exit deal negotiated between the UK and the European Union.
While Murphy voted remain in the 2016 EU Referendum, after three years of stalled talks between London and Brussels and the threat of an exit without a deal, he's just pleased a plan has been agreed upon before the October 31 deadline, which could have seen Britain fall out of the world's largest trading bloc.
Their trucks cross the border 23,000 times a year, and while this industry would not face tariffs under WTO rules, the administrative burden of processing thousands of small shipments would potentially put the company out of business.
A hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland could force trucks to drive miles further to reach customs posts, and additional paperwork would mean hiring new people and would be a logistical nightmare.
Balcas manufactures wood products both for the UK and Republic of Ireland market.
In the south, the market is hungry for contruction material to fuel the construction boom, while to the north, they sell wood pellets for stoves and planks that will be turned into pallets.
"We haven't crossed the line yet, there's a great hope that we at least have a chance now to cross the line and not end up with an no-deal," he said.
In a workshop in the mill, Gary Johnston is maintaining the blades of the huge saws.
He's a third generation saw doctor, and says he's a Unionist but "with a small 'u'."
"I think the deal (British Prime Minister) Boris Johnson came back with, I think it's as good as we're going to get. I think if Northern Ireland can get the best of both worlds and sell the EU and sell it to the rest of Great Britain then we're landed," he said.
The nearby town of Enniskillen is part of Fermanagh and South Tyrone, Foster's constituency in the Northern Irish National Assembly, but there is a diversity of opinion among unionists here, from those who prioritise fluid trade with the south, to those who refuse any threat to the union between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Thomas Elliott is the former leader of the Ulster Unionist Party.
He thinks the DUP has already compromised too much and said the new deal "does drive that wedge between Northern Ireland and the rest of the United Kingdom, which is dangerous for us constitutionally."
Speaking about Johnson's Brexit deal, Elliott said the prime minister "thinks it's a reasonable deal for us. We as unionists in Northern Ireland don't believe that".
