STORYLINE:
A New Zealand court held a brief review hearing on Thursday in the case of Brenton Tarrant, the man accused of killing 51 people in the Christchurch mosque massacre.
Tarrant was excused from appearing in court and was represented by his lawyers.
They're applying for his future trial to be moved away from Christchurch.
With a heavy police presence outside the law courts, the public gallery was filled with victims and families of those who lost their lives in the massacre.
Speaking from Tuvalu where she's attending the Pacific Islands Forum, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern expressed concern at the news that Tarrant had been able to send seven letters from jail.
She said there had been a "systemic failure" on the part of the Department of Corrections, which manages the country's prisons.
The trial date has been set for May 3 but court officials are discussing the possibility of delaying the trial by three to four weeks.
The local Muslim community expressed concerns that this date coincides with the observance of Ramadan.
Tarrant has pleaded not guilty to 51 charges of murder and 40 charges of attempted murder.
