"In 1996 I'd gone over to Bosnia with then-First Lady Mrs Clinton and she was there to visit women and children who were in these war-torn areas and to speak with them.  And I was actually there to play for the troops and I'd never seen anything like it.  Obviously I grew up at the end of the Vietnam War and my recollection of that was from the, you know, standpoint of a child's eyes, and I'd just never seen anything like it.  And when I came home, all over the news was this genocide going on in Rwanda.  And it really just, I was so emotional about what I'd seen and what I was seeing at home and trying to put everything together as to why we go into some places and other places we don't."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sheryl Crow, recording artist - on Johnny Cash's version of "Redemption Day":
"Johnny Cash, who was a dear friend, lost his wife June and, who was actually a very dear friend.  And after she passed, he reached out to me through his son-in-law and said he went to record that song.  And you know, it is a song that asks the big questions about why we go into war and what makes that decision.  And his, his voice speaking that right now, particularly about what freedom is and this idea that how we act while we're alive is witnessed by all of our children and history, and that we all eventually get on the same train headed to Heaven's gates and that's what defines us.  And so to hear him singing that right now is just extremely powerful and profound."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Sheryl Crow, recording artist - on getting his family's blessing:
"But I also sent it to Roseanne (Cash) and she said she just wept because she could feel - and this wasn't with the video, it was just the song - she could feel her father's presence and she said, 'I'd never felt that since he passed.'  And that made me feel really good.  I mean, I would never want to do anything to dishonor him, but knowing who he was and what he stood for and how he was fearless in his crusades for American Indians and was so against the Iraq war and was outspoken about the Vietnam War and so on and so forth.  It's… I feel like he would be proud."

"To me what this version is is… it is an essence.  It's the essence of the song.  It's exposed and, and it's beautiful.  It's also, it's also… it opens the heart to an understanding of the state of our world and where we are right now.  So I'm so grateful that, that Sheryl has, has the courage to make these statements and I know that my father also joins with her in heart or he never would have recorded it in the first place.  And thank you again Scott for being here."

STORYLINE:
SHERYL CROW RE-RELEASES 'REDEMPTION DAY' WITH JOHNNY CASH VOCALS
Sheryl Crow has released a political and spiritual song about war featuring vocals from the late Johnny Cash.
Crow's "Redemption Day" was originally released on her 1996 self-titled album and the song was later recorded by Cash and released posthumously in 2010.  Cash died in 2003.
Crow recorded a new version of the song and added his vocals for a haunting duet that was released Friday (19 APRIL 2019), with a music video featuring footage of Cash, alongside historical footage of war, genocide and political and social movements.
Crow visited the Cash Cabin Studio in Hendersonville, Tennessee, where Cash recorded his vocals, to talk about the meaning behind the song.  She explained that she wrote the song after visiting with American troops during the Bosnia War in 1996.
"I'd just never seen anything like it," Crow said. "And when I came home, all over the news was this genocide going on in Rwanda.  And it really just, I was so emotional about what I'd seen and what I was seeing at home and trying to put everything together as to why we go into some places and other places we don't."
Crow, who was friends with the Cash family, said that he asked to record the song again during the last months of his life.
"It is a song that asks the big questions about why we go into war and what makes that decision," said Crow.  "And his voice speaking that right now, particularly about what freedom is and this idea that how we act while we're alive is witnessed by all of our children and history, and that we all eventually get on the same train headed to Heaven's gates and that's what defines us.  And so to hear him singing that right now is just extremely powerful and profound."
Crow said that she got the blessing of the Cash family to use his vocals.
"I would never want to do anything to dishonor him, but knowing who he was and what he stood for and how he was fearless in his crusades for American Indians and was so against the Iraq war and was outspoken about the Vietnam War and so on and so forth," Crow said.  "I feel like he would be proud."
John Carter Cash, the son of John and June Carter Cash, said that his father would never sing a song he didn't agree with.
"I'm so grateful that Sheryl has the courage to make these statements and I know that my father also joins with her in heart or he never would have recorded it in the first place," Cash said.
