SHOTLIST: Lord's, London, UK - 18th August 2019
1. 00:00 SOUNDBITE (English): Joe Root, England captain
(Did you feel you did everything you could to win the game?)
"Yeah I think we did. I really do. I thought that we threw everything at them there. Gave ourselves a good amount of overs to try and create things and sometimes you need absolutely everything to go for you. l might look back at the missed opportunity, but all in all it was a fantastic effort. From start of the day, that partnership between Jos (Buttler) and Ben (Stokes) up to lunch and then the way they went through the gears. Ben in particular was brilliant. So to get us to that score we knew that it was going to be very difficult for Australia to get any sort of result out of the game. And the bowlers put in a real good shift. And credit to Australia that they managed to hang on."
2. 00:43 SOUNDBITE (English): Joe Root, England captain
(On the blow that Steve Smith suffered)
"Yes, I mean that was a horrible moment. You're always trying to find different ways of getting players like Steve out. You never want to see anyone get hurt. And I couldn't believe that he managed to come back out and play. Obviously desperate to do well for Australia and for his teammates. All of us in the dressing room just want to wish him a speedy recovery. It was not a nice moment. You never want to see someone go down hurt. So, we'll plan for him to be ready to play (at Headingley) and have to keep trying to find ways to get him out."
3. 01:20 SOUNDBITE (English): Joe Root, England captain
(On Jofra Archer)
"As I say, he makes things happen when not many others in world cricket can. Such a unique sort of action and way of bowling. And obviously natural pace, which is always going to be in the game on any surface. When you've got that and the skill of the other guys around, it makes for a tasty combination. And I think that's one of the reasons why we felt we were always in the game tonight and always felt we could get a result right to the end there. He obviously works very hard and had quite a big workload this week and make sure he does everything right to be 100 percent ready to go at Headingley."
4. 02:01 SOUNDBITE (English): Joe Root, England captain
(Has the momentum changed after the first Test?)
"Things change quickly in sport and you know it's just nice for us to be in a good place going into Headingley. We've still got to win at least two games. But it was important we gave a really good response this week and now it puts us in a really good place going into that game. So, really pleased with how how we managed to take as much as we could from such a shortened game and now hopefully we can get it to one-all at Headingley."
5. 02:33 SOUNDBITE (English): Tim Paine, Australia captain
(Considering what played out in the last session, to what extent was today a 'great escape' for Australia?)
"I wouldn't say it was a great escape at all. I would have said we played reasonably well to 3 for 130. And then you have a little something that doesn't quite go your way and you've got a guy bowling 150K's (kilometres per hour) and it's quite dark and it's difficult. That's Test cricket and we got to find a way out of it. Yeah I'm really proud of our team. I thought in the first innings as well I thought the way our tail stuck at some pretty uncomfortable batting period of time. I know some tails wouldn't dig in like ours did so I was really proud of the way they went about in the first innings."
6. 03:11 SOUNDBITE (English): Tim Paine, Australia captain
(On Steve Smith's situation)
"The advice is at the moment that he pulled up a bit groggy this morning, so he was ruled out of today. Reasons being that after passing some initial tests, he failed this morning, and he'll be reassessed in the next few days probably constantly, I would imagine."
7. 03:28 SOUNDBITE (English): Tim Paine, Australia captain
(Joe Root has suggested that Jofra Archer has changed the dynamic of the series and given you guys something to think about. What would you say to that?)
"It's one nil. We go to a Test match next week in Leeds. We're in a great position. We're happy with the position we're in. I thought Jofra bowled really well in this game. As I said, I thought particularly in the first innings I think we faced 100 odd overs, so there were periods of times where I thought we'd batted really well. Played Jofra well. I think at times he is very difficult to stay your innings against because of the pace and the bounce that he gets. But again, I think guys who got in and showed that it is it is doable. But guys have been around bowling 145, 150Ks for a long time and it's a challenge and that is why we are playing Test cricket."
8. 04:10 SOUNDBITE (English): Tim Paine, Australia captain
"I think the reason a lot of guys were hit in this game is because the pitch was actually a little bit two-paced as well. So it was very difficult to ever decide to pull or to duck, because you duck some it didn't get up when you try and stand up and pull and it took off. So that just made it all the more challenging.

STORYLINE:
Australia defied the absence of star batsman Steve Smith because of a concussion and more devastating spells of pace bowling by Jofra Archer to hold out for a draw in the second Ashes Test against England on Sunday.
Set an improbable victory target of 267 off 48 overs at Lord's, the Australians quickly slumped to 47-3 but a fourth-wicket stand of 85 between Marnus Labuschagne (59) and Travis Head (42 not out) helped push them to safety.
Australia lost three more wickets in a five-over stretch to keep the match alive as the light faded, but managed to survive to 154-6 at the end.
Australia retained a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
