I know I'm going to shed a lot of tears in the days to come. And right now, you're around a lot of people, but when you take those moments and you're by yourself and you really start thinking about it, it's hard to imagine that he's gone."
5. Rene Sotomayor wears a Bryant shirt and stands outside memorial for basketball star
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Rene Sotomayor, Kobe Bryant fan:
"It's crazy. There's people that are crying, there's people that are emotional, there's a lot of stories everyone's sharing. There's other guys that I've talked to that are fathers that were talking about what a great father he was, how he was with his daughter, people talking about basketball, people that are businesspeople. Businesspeople are saying, 'Man, he was such a great businessman.' I think he influenced so many people on so many different levels. I know Nipsey (musician) was a big thing that happened in L.A., they're honoring him tonight. But like I say, Kobe was even bigger than that because to be a Nipsey fan, you had to be a hip hop fan. Kobe transcended music, you know. Whether you were old, whether you were young, and it didn't matter where you were from. If you just loved basketball and respected hard work and someone that had drive, then you loved Kobe."
7. Martina Araula holds a "Rest in Peace Kobe and Gigi" sign
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Martina Araula, Bryant fan:
"I just felt like he had so much more that we were looking forward to because basketball was done. We already accepted that, but he was still everywhere. And just knowing that it's not going to be just about basketball anymore, it's more about his life and what he's done, and outside of basketball. And the fact that he had daughters and I was playing sports growing up and he was our icon, and the fact that he was trying to push that this was going to be your next icon and she was his daughter. That was just how I can relate. I just appreciated that he cared so much about women's sports and that, outside of basketball, that's just what I really, really appreciated about him.
9. Fans take photos and sign posters at memorial for Kobe Bryant
10. A fan carries a stuffed Kobe Bryant doll
11. SOUDNBITE (English) Julie Sierra, Bryant fan:
"I came out with my friends, we decided to come out, and one thing that I had really noticed is for the amount of people that are out here, it's silent. Everybody's in grief. Everybody's mourning. Everybody has respect for this man and his family and his daughter. It's painful. We really lost somebody legendary today. So it's felt in the environment."
12. A fan signs a Kobe Bryant poster
13. Tight of pictures of Bryant and candles
14. SOUNDBITE (English) William Anderson, Bryant fan:
"I still can't believe it. I still can't. It's just like a bad dream like you feel like you won't wake up from, or something like that. But I don't know, I can't believe it. I won't believe it. But I guess it's real. But it's kind of hard to believe, even though he was with his daughter as well. And I have my sons, it just makes me feel like a regular outing, you know, like 'Hurry, let's get to practice. Let's hurry up and get there real fast.' You know, and I feel like that's something that happened. You know, they was just in a fast pace and probably moving fast. You know, and tragedies come unexpected, especially to the ones we love the most. But Kobe, he is L.A., he is L.A., even though he's from Philly. He went to Spain and travelled, he still is L.A. Here's the home. You know, he needs his trophy, he needs a statue out here. You know, not only Shaq (retired basketball star), Kobe needs his, as well."
15. A fan raises a giant framed photo of Bryant, prompting the crowd to chant "Kobe!"
16. SOUNDBITE (English) William Anderson, Bryant fan:
"It's like Magic, Kobe. They're like, they're Mount Rushmore of L.A. They're our Mount Rushmore.
17. Fans chant "Kobe"
18. SOUNDBITE (English) Riley Anderson, 10-year-old Bryant fan:
"I'm feeling really sad. Kobe was one of my favorite players. So to see that he's dead, it makes me sad."
19. Electronic signs that say "In loving memory" for Bryant are illuminated outside a hotel near the Staples Center
20. Tight of Bryant memorial
