"The tariffs obviously wouldn't have had a big effect this year as we have already stocked to the end of the year. But where it would end up hurting us is the beginning of next year. January and February and March are pretty slow times in the toy industry so to have those extra costs on top of the already struggling months of the year would be a huge impact for us."

"We play a lot more defense in our business than we did offense. So we bought excess inventory to make sure we could get through the Christmas season without having to raise prices for our consumers. We probably lost 3 percent off of our bottom line. Those cost come from moving product around different warehouses cause you need extra warehouse space to hold more product."

This is one of the busiest weeks of the year for American retailers. And now there is an extra reason to celebrate -- the phase-one trade agreement with China will prevent tariff hikes that were set to take effect this month.
A 15-percent tariff was set to be imposed on imported toys from China on December 15. But those tariffs were avoided following a phase-one trade agreement between the U.S. and China.
Scott Friedland, who runs a toy shop in Chicago, is pleased that tariffs aren't going up. Winter is the high season to buy toys and nearly half of all U.S. toy sales are reportedly made during the holiday period.
"The tariffs obviously wouldn't have had a big effect this year as we have already stocked to the end of the year. But where it would end up hurting us is the beginning of next year. January and February and March are pretty slow times in the toy industry so to have those extra costs on top of the already struggling months of the year would be a huge impact for us," he said.
Three-quarters of their toys and games are made in China. Last year, the United States imported some 18.5 billion dollars' worth of toys from China.
Although there will be relief across the industry that the tariffs on toys are not imposed, the threat has still caused a range of issues as companies attempt to beat the tariff deadline.
Michael Roberts, the owner and president of Regal Toys, a company dates back to the 1940s, said they import products from China now in order to increase competitiveness in the market.
"We play a lot more defense in our business than we did offense. So we bought excess inventory to make sure we could get through the Christmas season without having to raise prices for our consumers. We probably lost 3 percent off of our bottom line. Those cost come from moving product around different warehouses cause you need extra warehouse space to hold more product," he said.
The threat to the industry remains. Although a phase-one trade deal has been agreed, some in the industry fear the "next phase" talks could break going forward and the threat of tariffs could return.
"I honestly don't want 25 percent tariffs, but if they are going to happen, I would love to have certainty to say this is what is going to be happening. There are a million uncertainties. I really don't appreciate it when the government becomes an uncertainty as well," Robert said.
For now, for the American toy industry, the nightmare before Christmas has been avoided. Toy manufacturers and retailers hope it stays that way.
