LEADIN
Ahead of World Bee day on May 20, Bosnian beekeepers are increasingly worried for the future of their hives.
They say they are threatened by climate change, pollution and poor bee keeping techniques.
STORYLINE:
Osman Hasimovic has been passionate about beekeeping since attending an agricultural training program nearly 20 years ago.
"We all started keeping bees for our own benefit, but in the process, one falls in love with them. The only creatures I love more than bees are my children," he explains.
Like most bee keepers in Bosnia, Hasimovic is a mobile beekeeper. He uses the advantage of landscape diversity and takes his bees to forage in the wild all over the country.
Despite owning over 100 beehives, for the past four years Hasimovic's hives have been producing less and less honey and he has been struggling to make ends meet.
He blames unusually rainy springs and summers, as well as worsening levels of air and land pollution in the country for the bees lack of productivity, plus inexperienced bee keeper who take too much honey from their hives.
"As far as the importance of bees for humanity is concerned, I can say that bees play the key role in (sustaining) the circle of life. But all our problems affect the bees, including global pollution and climate change and, very importantly, inept bee farmers," Hasimovic says.
Bees, beetles and butterflies play a vital role in global food production, as pollinators.
Bees act as agents of pollination, transferring pollen grains from male to female parts of flowers. As a result, seeds are produced.
Many agricultural crops are dependant on pollinators according to the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), including coffee, chocolate, sunflower and sesame oils and tea plants.
The FAO says between $235 and $577 billion USD worth of annual global food production relies directly on pollinators.
But, according to a 2016 report by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), an estimated 16 percent of vertebrate pollinators are threatened with global extinction.
It's claimed wild pollinators are being threatened by a variety of factors, from habitat destruction and intensive agriculture, to pesticides, disease and climate change.
Another bee keeper Mehmed Smajlovic agrees that bees play an essential role in biodiversity.
"One in three spoonfuls of food humans eat directly or indirectly depends on bees. One in three. And I am not talking just about honey. The primary job and mission of bees is pollination of crop plants, and to pollinate plants means to extend their life, to create diversity and favourable conditions for life on earth, so we all depend on bees."
Over the past few years, Smajlovic expanded his business by starting to harvest not only honey, but also pollen, royal jelly and bee wax.
But this keen observer of bees warns of a dangerous trend.
"Bees are flexible creatures and willing to adapt to all kinds of conditions, but their life and work greatly depend on how humans treat the environment,"
Bee keepers taking too much honey from hives leads to colony collapse he says, but attitutudes are changing and more sustainable bee keeping is more commonplaces.
"Not so long ago, a beekeeper who harvested significant quantities of bee products was perceived as successful and his practice was believed to be good. Nowadays, keeping your bees alive is what makes you a good beekeeper," he adds.
Another challenge facing bees is habitat loss, most often caused by human activity, such as urban construction or land clearing for agricultural use.
Habitat loss deprives bees of locations to build their nests and also collect nectar for honey production.
Protecting habitats, educating farmers and reducing the use of damaging pesticides are just some ways that the UNEP recommends we save the world's bees and butterflies, thus protecting our crops, one pollination at a time.
