STORYLINE:
It was a grey morning when students on a school trip from south western Germany jumped on their bicycles to discover one of their country's darkest chapters.
Andrea Kuenstle, a 51-year-old photographer and tour guide leads the 10th grade pupils on a bike route along the Berlin Wall.
Built in 1961, the 155-kilometre (96-mile) barrier had carved an absurd, brutal path through the centre of the city and the hearts of its citizens.
Between the time it was erected in 1961 and its fall in 1989, at least 140 people died attempting to across the barrier.
The students first stop at the Boese Burecke, a symbolic bridge which marked the division between the communist East and the Allied West.
Here, a plaque on the ground, covered by autumn leaves, shows the time and date of the fall.
Photos illustrate the moment thousands of East Germans were able to cross into the West for the first time.
During their cycle, the students pass by Mauerpark, where the so-called "death strip" once was.
Some of the students and teachers climb onto the preserved inner wall.
Before November 1989, anyone found in the area would have been shot on sight.
Tour guide Kuenstle said that it was important young people visit the Wall to know more about what previous generations, particularly those living in East German communism, had to endure.
"If they had no relatives or friends from their parents or grandparents in the East, they don't really know anything," Kuenstle said.
"Unfortunately, it is also the case that German students have much less of an idea about it (the history of the Wall) than foreign guests," Kuenstle added.
Susanne Luhr, a history teacher accompanying the students on their ride, said she believed there wasn't enough education about the Wall in some German schools.
"Where we come from in the southwest (of Germany) you wouldn't have had many points of contact with East Germany or East Berlin and if you don't have any relatives there it's natural for the students (to think) that Germany belonged together."
On November 9, several events will be held marking 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.
