STORYLINE:
Thailand is rolling out the red carpet for Pope Francis this week. During the first papal visit in 35 years, the pontiff will meet the king, the prime minister and the Buddhist supreme patriarch, and give two public masses in a celebration of religious freedom.
In the rice fields of a remote Thai province, local Catholics mark a dark day, almost 80 years ago, when that freedom vanished in a volley of gunfire.
Every October, in Mukdahan province, 550 km northeast of Bangkok, priests and people come to honour the seven martyrs of Songkhon village.
French missionaries brought their faith to Songkhon. It was that association with France that sealed the fate of the victims - one man and six women. Today, their statues loom over the pilgrims.
In late 1940, emboldened by Germany's defeat of France and galvanized by Japanese rhetoric in Asia, Thai forces attacked French troops in Laos and Cambodia. They sought to regain land they'd surrendered years before as the price of preserving Thai independence.
Ultra-nationalism gripped the land, eventually reaching Songkhon village and its community of fervent Catholics.
Father Prayoon Phongphit, Chancellor of the region's Archdiocese, explained that the Thai authorities thought the missionaries were getting orders from the French government.
As tensions grew, police gave Songkhon's Catholics an ultimatum: renounce your faith or die. They deported their French priest. His deputy was murdered and became the first martyr.
On Christmas Day, Sister Agnes Phila Tipsuk wrote to the police commander telling him to carry out his order to kill the Catholics. She said: "We are ready to return our lives to God."
The next day, officers took her and five other women to a graveyard, made them kneel in front of a log, and shot them. The youngest victim was 14 years old.
Today, Songkhon is one of the most important Catholic sites in Thailand with a shrine and educational centre where pilgrims pray before effigies of the martyrs.
In 1989, the Songkhon seven were beatified by Pope John Paul II, a step on the road to sainthood. The annual ceremony celebrates this milestone.
Elizabeth Boonsong Sitthi, a 62-year-old visitor to the Songkhon shrine, said she was proud that her country will soon host the Pope.
France is due to arrive in Thailand on Wednesday and he leaves early Saturday.
With just two full days in the country, he won't be visiting Songkhon. He'll stay in Bangkok. But even so, anticipation of his visit gave the commemoration in October an added relish.
