Evidence has shown that the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) which causes pneumonia can be passed from person to person, according to a leading Chinese medical expert.
Dr. Zhong Nanshan, an academician with the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in an interview with China Central Television (CCTV) Monday that enough evidence has confirmed that the coronavirus is contagious among humans.
"We considered risks of this before, but now evidence has confirmed that it is contagious among humans. There is such evidence collected from Wuhan. Meanwhile there are two patients in Guangdong who had not been to Wuhan, but caught the novel coronavirus after their family members came back from Wuhan. The two patients are from two separate households, both confirmed to have the same virus, which is the novel coronavirus. Thus as of now we can confirm that cases of the virus being passed from person to person definitely exist," said Zhong.
Zhong has been credited with helping to identify and then stem the 2003 outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, or SARS.
As of 18:00 Monday, a total of 224 cases of pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus had been reported in China. Of them, 217 had been confirmed and 7 remained suspected.
Overseas, one case has been confirmed in Japan, two in Thailand, and one in the Republic of Korea.
China has vowed resolute efforts to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus. President Xi Jinping ordered putting people's safety and health as the top priority.
Premier Li Keqiang also instructed related government departments and localities to improve response plans and spare no effort in prevention and control in this regard.
A State Council joint task force on Monday held a teleconference to make an overall arrangement for prevention and control of the virus outbreak. The National Health Commission has set up a leading group to cope with the situation and give guidance in local response efforts.
