"You never have any expectations for anything, really and it's been sort of crazy the fact that like people love something as much as you do is so, so, so, so good. I'm sort of at a loss for words about it sometimes because people really, really love 'Booksmart' so much and people are really, really loving 'Unbelievable', so it's been really crazy."

"People used to ask me if I liked drama or comedy, which one I liked better and I can never answer it. I think they're actually very similar. I almost prepare for them the same way. I think that with - you know, there's a lot of difficult elements about comedy and there's a lot of difficult elements about comedy and there's a lot of difficult things about drama as well. I like to start with honesty - I think you have to start with honesty with both."

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Kaitlyn Dever, actress:
"I just want to continue to read scripts and look for projects that are interesting and that are different from the last. It's actually kind of funny. After 'Booksmart' happened, I thought, I was expecting to get a lot of comedic scripts sent to me, but it's been really just kind of across the board, I think that's because of 'Unbelievable.' It's really just been all over the place which I again, I just really, really love, so it's been - I just feel really, really lucky. I know it's so rare to be in a movie like 'Booksmart' and then I know it's really rare to be a part of something like 'Unbelievable' and the fact that I was able to do both in the same year, I feel really grateful and lucky. Really, really do."

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Kaitlyn Dever, actress:
"I think I've been meeting a lot of really, really incredible people and I think I've also been meeting people that I like have always looked up to and a lot of people have been messaging me, actors that I really, really admire and telling me that they loved my work in 'Unbelievable.' That wasn't happening two years ago, three years ago. So the fact that that's happening now, is just - I don't know, it's actually like, really, really, it's cool to know that a person that you really, really look up to has seen you in something, it makes me like really, really happy. But I don't know if my life has really changed and I don't know if I really want it to change. All I want - I feel - I'm the happiest when I am working and I feel so calm and content when I'm on set. It's so fulfilling and I couldn't imagine doing anything else so I just really want to continue to be a part of amazing projects and things that I love and also working with like really, really good people. Because that's something that I also have really appreciated about the projects I have been a part of in the past. They've all been - I've gotten really lucky and I've worked with like really, really, really good, good people."

STORYLINE:
2019 BREAKTHROUGH ENTERTAINER: KAITLYN DEVER MADE US LAUGH AND CRY THIS YEAR IN TWO VASTLY DIFFERENT ROLES
Actress Kaitlyn Dever got laughs in the hit summer movie "Booksmart" this year and then gave a gripping performance as a rape victim in the Netflix series, "Unbelievable." Her versatility and memorable roles in both comedy and drama made her one of The Associated Press' Breakthrough Entertainers of 2019.
Despite recent efforts towards gender equality in Hollywood, it can still be challenging to find meaty roles for women - whether it's comedy or drama, film or TV - but actress Kaitlyn Dever killed it in both genres and mediums this year.
Dever made hoards of fans after playing bright and goofy Amy in the female-driven film "Booksmart," about two tightly-wound overachievers intent on one last crazy night before graduation. A few months later, she won critical praise for her moving portrayal of a lonely rape victim in the Netflix series "Unbelievable."
Some may not have even recognized her as the same actress as the roles were so different in subject and tone, but Dever said she loved the paradox.
"I love bouncing back and forth between drama and comedy. People used to ask me if I liked drama or comedy, which one I liked better, and I can never answer. I think they're actually very similar. I almost prepare for them the same way....I think you have to start with honesty with both," Dever told the Associated Press in a recent interview.
Dever says after seeing actress Toni Collette in the 1999 movie "The Sixth Sense" she "was blown away by how real she seemed" and decided acting was what she wanted to do with her life. She began with small TV roles when she was 10 and has been working steadily since, with her first recurring role in the series "Justified" in 2011 and several supporting film roles before landing the lead in "Booksmart."
At a young age (Dever turns 23 on December 21st) she has already had a full-circle moment, starring with Collette in "Unbelievable." She got the chance to tell her inspiration what she meant to her and said Collette was "very flattered."
It's no coincidence that both of Dever's roles this year involved female creators on and off-screen. She calls working on sets with other women "comforting."
"I totally think that we need so many more women involved in the industry and making movies. We've made a lot of really big moves. I think there's still a lot of work to be done.....Both of those projects were very, very female driven, which is something I want to continue to do on other projects," she said.
While she loved working on both roles, she wasn't sure how either would be received but was excited when fans connected with the characters.
"I knew it was special but you never have any expectations for anything you do, really. It's been sort of crazy. The fact that people love something as much as you do is so, so good. Watching the love grow and grow for 'Booksmart' was something I'll remember forever." She says premiering the film at the South by Southwest film festival was "insane." "People were like laughing and then people were brought to tears and they were cheering afterward. I mean, it was a really, really, cool moment."
Dever says her recent success has translated to a lot more travel and interesting work prospects. She's set to star in two anthology series, "Monsterland" and "Platform" soon, and is "dying" to do a musical film. She adds humanity and depth to each character she plays, no matter the venue, and she says she just wants to keep working on good projects with great people.
"I don't know if my life has really changed and I don't want it to change. I'm the happiest when I am working and I feel so calm and content when I'm on set. It's so fulfilling and I couldn't imagine doing anything else."
