STORYLINE:
Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla were formally welcomed at Maori meeting grounds in Christchurch on Friday as part of their weeklong trip to New Zealand.
They were welcomed with a haka which the royal couple observed wearing Maori cloaks.
They were later joined by New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to visit Cashmere High School, where they met with students affected by an attack earlier this year in which 51 Muslim worshippers were killed.
Christchurch was also the scene of a deadly earthquake in 2011.
"In all of this," Prince Charles said, "the strength of the New Zealand character, which I have long-admired, has shone through, with tolerance, courage and compassion on such conspicuous display."
The couple are due to visit the Christchurch Cathedral later on Friday.
