ఐరోపా సమాఖ్య ఎన్నికల్లో పాల్గొనాలని బ్రిటన్ ప్రభుత్వం నిర్ణయించింది. ఈయూ ఎన్నికల కంటే ముందు బ్రెగ్జిట్ ఒప్పందం ఆమోదం పొందే అవకాశం లేకపోవడమే ఇందుకు కారణం.

ఈ నెలలో జరిగే ఐరోపా సమాఖ్య(ఈయూ) ఎన్నికల్లో తప్పకుండా పాల్గొనాలని బ్రిటన్ ప్రభుత్వం తాజాగా నిర్ణయించుకుంది. ఈయూ ఎన్నికల కంటే ముందుగా బ్రెగ్జిట్ ఒప్పందం పార్లమెంటులో ఆమోదం పొందే అవకాశం లేనందున ఆ నిర్ణయానికి వచ్చింది థెరిసా మే ప్రభుత్వం.

ఈ నెల 23న ఐరోపా సమాఖ్యకు ఎన్నికలు జరగనున్నాయి. ఈయూ నుంచి వైదొలగాలని బ్రిటన్ ప్రజలు బ్రెగ్జిట్ తీర్మానానికి ఓటు వేసి దాదాపు మూడు సంవత్సరాలు కావొస్తుంది. ఇప్పుడు మరోసారి ఓటింగ్లో పాల్గొననున్నారు ఆ దేశ ప్రజలు.

బ్రిటన్ ప్రధాని థెరిసా మే నేతృత్వంలోని కన్జర్వేటివ్ పార్టీ... 751 స్థానాలు ఉన్న యూరోపియన్ యూనియన్ ఎన్నికల్లో పాల్గొనకూడదని భావించింది. అయితే ఎన్నికల కంటే ముందు బ్రెగ్జిట్ ఒప్పందం ఆమోదం పొందే వీలులేనందున పాల్గొనక తప్పదని నిర్ణయించుకుంది.

థెరిసా మే ప్రతిపాదించిన బ్రెగ్జిట్ ఒప్పందాన్ని బ్రిటన్ చట్టసభ సభ్యులు పార్లమెంటులో పలుమార్లు తిరస్కరించారు. ఈ నేపథ్యంలోనే ఈయూ నుంచి బ్రిటన్ నిష్క్రమణ తేదీ మార్చి 29 నుంచి అక్టోబర్ 31కు వాయిదా పడింది.

"So Madam President, I've just listened to my friend the majority leader engage in an astounding bit of whitewashing, not unexpected but entirely unconvincing. Yes the Mueller investigation took two years and yes it produced a stunning document in the end, not only a damning appraisal of our election security and just how willing a major presidential campaign was to accept and amplify the disinformation of a foreign adversary, but also through an examination of the behavior of a lawless president, who at least on eleven occasions, according to the report, may have obstructed a federal investigation. So while my friend the majority leader wants to say case closed, I don't blame him. 375 former federal prosecutors looked at the Mueller report and said publicly that the conduct of the president amounts to felony obstruction of justice and that in any other case were he not president, those prosecutors would recommend bringing charges. So our leader says let's move on. It's sort of like Richard Nixon saying let's move on at the height of the investigation of his wrongdoing. Of course he wants to move on. He wants to cover up. He wants to silence on one of the most serious issues we face: whether a foreign power can manipulate our elections, the wellspring of our democracy."

STORYLINE:
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is declaring "case closed" on the Russia probe and potential obstruction by President Donald Trump, deriding Democrats who he says are "grieving" the result.
The Republican leader, in his most significant public comments yet on the investigation, opened the Senate Tuesday with a speech discussing how special counsel Robert Mueller's "exhaustive" probe went on for two years and is now complete.
The remarks, which are certain to please the president, are being billed as his final thoughts on the topic. "It's finally over," McConnell said.
Mueller's results are "bad news for the outrage industrial complex but good news for the rest of the country," McConnell said.
Republicans, taking their cues from Trump, are eager to push past the investigation. But the case is anything but closed for Democrats, who are pressing for further oversight of the White House and the president's handling of the Mueller probe.
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer shot back in his own speech immediately afterward, calling McConnell's words an "astounding bit of whitewashing."
"What we have here is a concerted effort to circle the wagons, to protect the president from accountability," Schumer said.
As McConnell says the Senate is moving on, the Democrat-led House is aggressively pursuing a copy of the full, unredacted Mueller report.
Mueller released a redacted version to the public last month, but Democrats want to see the full document, plus underlying documents, and have scheduled a committee vote for Wednesday to hold Attorney General William Barr in contempt for not providing it.
Democrats have also been in negotiations to hear from Mueller himself.
President Trump complicated those talks Sunday by tweeting that he would oppose Mueller's testimony, reversing from his earlier position of leaving it up to Attorney General William Barr.
As long as Mueller remains a Justice Department employee, Trump or Barr could block him from appearing. Trump has not indicated if he would take steps to do so.
