LEADIN:
A landfill site in the Siberian city of Irkutsk has turned into a free of charge, open-air museum.
Ten years ago, the site's director began creating art pieces from waste materials in his spare time.
Today, the landfill site is still in operation with rubbish trucks regularly offloading waste, ready to be turned into masterpieces.
STORYLINE:
Knights in shining armour guard the entrance to this landfill site in the Siberian city of Irkutsk.
On foot, on horses or in watch towers, dozens of armoured warriors made entirely out of scrap metal appear to protect the walls from enemies.
It all started about ten years ago, when landfill site's director had the idea to turn waste materials into works of art.
"Why knights? The main reason that played here was the material (available)," says Aleksandr Rastorguev, the site's director.
"Once there was a time when a lot of washing machines were being thrown out and electric irons, that is a heating device. So, I was thinking about where I could use them. And it occurred to me that I could do something with a historical theme - antiquity."
Rastorguev's hobby was so infectious that other staff members also began making art pieces in their free time.
The landmark now looks more like a medieval fortress – with wooden gates, high fences and menacing knights being led by a commander on horseback.
It's sometimes hard to believe that this is not a real museum.
It remains first and foremost a fully operating landfill site with rubbish trucks regularly offloading waste materials.
"We don't have any artists or sculptors and never have," says Rastorguev.
"This is made by people who work here and who wish to do this, without any force. When a person does it from his heart, when he wants to do it, then it comes out the way that you can see it."
Inside the medieval realm, visitors can find famous film heroes and fairy-tale characters.
One piece can take anything between one and two weeks to make, depending on whether it's a team or solo effort.
Over the last ten years, the collection has grown in size and can no longer go unnoticed.
Without any advertising, the site has become famed far outside the city of Irkutsk.
"We have come a long distance to get here, we are from the city of Chita," explains visitor Yevgeniya Romashkina.
"Rumours about this (place) spread not only in Irkutsk, but also in the Irkutsk region, and around Russia, that there is such an astonishing museum with a genius idea to make something beautiful from garbage."
There's also a museum within a museum - with an exhibition of all things that have been thrown away.
Shelfs are filled with old polaroid cameras, sewing machines, kerosene lamps, old TV sets, musical instruments, vases, chandeliers, fancy dishes and many other things.
Admission to the museum is free.
"I am visiting here for the first time. I have made a lot of expressions and they are all different, from surprise, admiration, a bit of fear and, of course, a touch of curiosity," says visitor, Aleksandra Tumanova.
If you look out into the distance, through these old binoculars, there's a battlefield that has been recreated as though it was during the times of the Second World War.
Since its opening in 2017, this place has been used to reconstruct battles and as a shooting range to test out firearms.
"When I went out into the field, when I heard the gun shots, I felt very uncomfortable," says Tumanova.
"And although the shots were few, you can imagine how it was during the Great Patriotic War, it was much louder, bigger, and this gives you the shivers."
The field boasts dozens of war equipment, including tanks such as the legendary Soviet T-34, restored by landfill staff.
"I have come here for the first time from China. I like this place, it is really wonderful and I haven't seen such a place like this before. I spent great time here," says visitor Zhao Hong He from China.
The exhibition continues to grow.
There's no catalogue of items in the museum, but the number of exhibits is estimated to be close to a thousand.
And the idea of recycling is quite attractive to visitors.
"Here there are a lot of old objects, good things, that perhaps have been lost or thrown away, which can be used again," says visitor, Yulia Koshkina.
"What's interesting about this is that things can be re-used, there is very much of an ecological theme. This is very important to us nowadays."
Staff at the landfill site take great pride in their work.
"It feels like we have done this ourselves with our own hands, moreover, I am sure people say that nobody else does anything like this elsewhere. So, of course, this is our child, and we are proud of it," says Rastorguev.
