7. SOUNDBITE (English) Vaughan Lee, Nyamba Buru Yawuru ranger:
"Yeah I think more or less the whole of Australia is worried with what's happening you know with the cane toads. Yeah I can see a major decline and maybe even extinction of the goanna species once they come through."

12. SOUNDBITE (English): Lachlan Pettit, University of Sydney Researcher: ++SOUNDBITE STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT++
"Yeah the pattern that we've seen repeatedly throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and the East Kimberley is that when toads do arrive in the area it's devastating for native predators like the goanna."

"Oh I think you know my feeling would be very low, a bit sad. Losing a culturally significant food source would make a big dent in the Yawuru community and in the Yawuru people itself."

LEAD IN:
Scientists and rangers are concerned northern Australia's goanna population is being threatened by the toxic cane toad.
By mapping out the healthy goanna population, they hope to prevent future ecological damage.
STORYLINE:
On the fertile plains in Western Australia's northeastern corner goannas are running wild.
While in season they make a tasty meal for Yawuru Rangers if you can catch them.
But the impending invasion of the apex predator, the toxic cane toad, is a concern for all.
It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when.
"Yeah, I think more or less the whole of Australia is worried with what's happening you know with the cane toads. Yeah I can see a major decline and maybe even extinction of the goanna species once they come through," says ranger Vaughan Lee.
Goanna's mistake the invasive species for food, then unable to stomach the toxins they die.
Rangers have teamed up with researchers to map goanna populations to learn what happens before and after the cane toads arrive, estimated in in this region in three to four years time.
Lachlan Pettit from the University of Sydney has 24 sites with trail camera from Broome to Townsville.
"Yeah the pattern that we've seen repeatedly throughout Queensland, Northern Territory and the East Kimberley is that when toads do arrive in the area it's devastating for native predators like the goanna," says Pettit.
Researchers say that in some areas cane toads can decimate goanna numbers by up to 90%.
If that happens many are worried they will lose an important traditional food source and a valuable connection to their culture.
It's a huge problem the rangers want to avoid at all costs.
"Oh, I think you know my feeling would be very low, a bit sad. Losing a culturally significant food source would make a big dent in the Yawuru community and in the Yawuru people itself" says Vaughn Lee,  a Nyamba Buru Yawuru ranger.
Early results from the research show survival is possible but lower numbers come at an environmental cost.
Goanna's are, "apex predators so they basically regulate the entire environment," says Pettit.
The study is due to be completed in 2020.
