2. SOUNDBITE (English) Clint Eastwood, director and Paul Walter Hauser, actor - on the recent criticism from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's editor on the accuracy of the film:
Clint Eastwood: "You know, I don't know. I think that probably the Atlantic Journal probably would be the one group that would be sort of complexed about the whole situation because they are the ones who printed the first thing of there being a crime caused by Richard Jewell. And so, they're probably looking for ways to rationalize their, their activity. I don't know for sure. I have never discussed it with anyone from there. But I think that I've just read a lot of material on Kathy Scruggs. I've read all the material I could find on her. And they all seem to corroborate the fact that she was somewhat on the wild side. And she's someone on the real wild side and she did, she did have interacted with police, law enforcement people in the Atlanta area."
Paul Walter Hauser: "And also, the biopics, Hollywood biopics are historically under scrutiny, whether it's the Dupont family in 'Foxcatcher,' whether it's the Catholic Church and 'Spotlight,' this is a very obvious thing that's happening with the AJC and we understand their plights. But we're telling our story. And I think, I think we did a really good job of it."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Jon Hamm, actor and Kathy Bates, actress - on the recent criticism from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's editor on the accuracy of the film:
Jon Hamm: "It's my understanding that he hasn't seen the film, that might be helpful. And I think that there's, there's a lot of, of information available about all of these people. And there's a lot of conjecture available about all these people. And again, it's not, the film is not an indictment of the media, of anyone in particular. It's a, it's a story about how a man and his and his life were turned upside down by people who maybe cut some corners."
Kathy Bates: "And I think too the book, is is very well written about who she was. And it's exactly, exactly like Olivia Wilde played her. How she was flamboyant, she dressed sexy. She had a great time. You know, she was often at scenes before the cops got there. There was so much more to her character than this one moment in the film that everybody's focused on. And that's a shame because we're all complex people. And in the book, it says it gives an impression and we give an impression in the film. So, you know, I think as Jon said, it's more a film than anything else."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Clint Eastwood, director -  on why he never gave up on making the film:
"I thought it was a great American tragedy. And it's always tragic when people run off with half information and don't really have the true set up in front of them. And sometimes everybody. There's a lot of people-- factors that make people feel, you know, the press, is sometimes in a hurry because there's so much competition to be the first to do something. And they get-- they pull the trigger before they're dialed in."

STORYLINE:
'RICHARD JEWELL' CAST FIRES BACK AGAINST CRITICISM OF THE FILM'S ACCURACY
Clint Eastwood has responded to criticism over his new film "Richard Jewell," about a security guard wrongfully suspected in the 1996 Atlanta bombing.
Jewell discovered a backpack placed under some bleachers during the 1996 Olympics, which turned out to be a bomb. He alerted police, saving countless lives, but a few days later was accused by the FBI and in the press of committing the crime, and was labeled a terrorist. Jewell, who was never charged, was later exonerated.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution was the first to report that authorities were questioning Jewell as a suspect in the bombing.  Now, their editor-in-chief Kevin G. Riley is challening the accuracy of the film.
Riley has criticized the notion that the paper ran the story based on questionable sourcing, and without challenging the law enforcement investigation - and that late reporter Kathy Scruggs traded sex with an FBI agent in exchange for story tips.
As he promoted the movie, Eastwood responded.
"I think that probably the Atlantic Journal probably would be the one group that would be sort of complexed about the whole situation because they are the ones who printed the first thing of there being a crime caused by Richard Jewell. And so, they're probably looking for ways to rationalize their activity. I don't know for sure," said the director.
Riley is arguing that there is no evidence Scruggs ever traded sex with an FBI agent in exchange for tips on a story.
"I think that I've just read a lot of material on Kathy Scruggs," continued Eastwood. "I've read all the material I could find on her. And they all seem to corroborate the fact that she was somewhat on the wild side. And she's someone on the real wild side and she did, she did have interacted with police, law enforcement people in the Atlanta area."
The film's cast say the newspaper editor hasn't watched the film, and is condemning the drama based on a description by an unnamed collegaue who attended a "Richard Jewell" preview screening.
"It's my understanding that he hasn't seen the film, that might be helpful," replied Jon Hamm who stars as the movie's lead FBI investigator.
Kathy Bates, who plays Jewell's mother, agrees with Eastwood's portrayal of Scruggs, adding that his interpretation "gives an impression" backed up by the book used as the source for the film's screenplay, "Richard Jewell: And Other Tales of Heroes, Scoundrels and Renegades" by Maria Brenner.
"It's exactly, exactly like Olivia Wilde played her. How she was flamboyant, she dressed sexy. She had a great time. You know, she was often at scenes before the cops got there. There was so much more to her character than this one moment in the film that everybody's focused on. And that's a shame because we're all complex people. And in the book, it says it gives an impression and we give an impression in the film."
"Every movie takes poetic license. But Olivia really did her research, I mean she really got in there," adds Sam Rockwell, who plays Jewell's lawyer Watson Bryant. " She comes from a family of journalists so that was important to her."
Richard Jewell died in 2007 at the age of 44, but was cleared before his death when Eric Rudolph was found guilty as the bomber.
What's most important to the cast is that his mother, Bobi Jewell, now 86, approves of the film.
"She loved it. I was so thrilled," said Bates. "We found out on the AFI premiere night that she loved it. And now there is a plaque or going to be a plaque in Centennial Park with Richard's name and what he did. The best reward ever."
"Richard Jewell" opens in U.S. theaters December 13.
