2. SOUNDBITE (English) Cillian Murphy, actor - on the complexity of his character, Tommy:
"He has some great qualities and I think, you know, Steven Knight said to me once, memorably, that he's a good man doing bad things to a good end. And, you know, that seems like a riddle, but it actually does make sense in a way."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Cillian Murphy, actor - on Tommy's inner conflict:
"Yeah, I think he's one of those characters that is actually burdened by an intellect. It's not a gift, it's a burden, because he's so far ahead of people always in the speed that he processes things. And I think as a result, he probably doesn't sleep very well. He probably finds, you know, common normal company tedious because he's like dun-dun-dun, so far ahead. And he's a strategist, you know, he's a decorated soldier. He's unafraid of death. But yet, he still has the sort of same needs and desires and wants as a regular human being. And that's all - that was all there in the text, in the scripts and I suppose we just, I try to, at the beginning certainly, to imbue him with some sort of stillness or distance, a man who is kind of emotionally but vacant, so any sort of - anytime you see a crack in that facade of humanity or care or vulnerability, it's very satisfying I hope for the audience."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Cillian Murphy, actor:
"His unpredictability and his vulnerability and this sort of - I don't know if he'll ever be happy. I don't know. We're all kind of searching for some sort of happiness, but this is a man who potentially has every - everything you could want for. He's an MP now, he lives in this mansion, he's richer than his wildest dreams. He has power, but yet I don't think he sleeps well. He's paranoid. He's potentially suicidal at times, so it's - that's fascinating and that continually surprises me, because when are men like that ever satisfied? Who knows, you know?"

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Cillian Murphy, actor - on the motivation of Tommy Shelby:
"I think for Tommy, for my character, to see men destroyed and blown up in front of you and you know, to see a body and its component parts makes it very hard to kind of rebuild your belief in humanity. So, he loses any belief in humanity and authority and in faith. But I think gradually over the course of those, of the series that we've done, I think we're seeing all of his values that existed pre-the first world war coming - they're being defrosted, if you like. And to answer your question, I did a lot of reading, obviously, about the First World War, between the wars, I did a lot of reading about PTSD, which wasn't really identified as a condition then, it would have been known as shellshock and men weren't treated for it. So, I guess I, you know, it's your duty to kind of know as much as you can. But ultimately the scripts are your main resource, really."

STORYLINE:
'PEAKY BLINDERS' STAR CILLIAN MURPHY REFLECTS ON THE COMPLEXITY OF HIS CHARACTER, TOMMY SHELBY
There's more to Thomas Shelby than meets the eye, and that's why Cillian Murphy loves playing the "Peaky Blinders" lead.
Murphy has played the gangster-turned politician on the series for six seasons.
"He has some great qualities and I think, you know, (creator) Steven Knight said to me once, memorably, that he's a good man doing bad things to a good end. And, you know, that seems like a riddle, but it actually does make sense in a way," Murphy said.
The Golden Globe nominee ("Breakfast on Pluto") zones in on the inner turmoil that motivates Shelby.
'I think he's one of those characters that is actually burdened by an intellect. It's not a gift, it's a burden, because he's so far ahead of people always in the speed that he processes things. And I think as a result, he probably doesn't sleep very well," Murphy said.
That's why he relishes those occasional moments that show the humanity of the emotionally vacant Tommy.
"He's a strategist. You know, he's a decorated soldier. He's unafraid of death. But yet, he still has the sort of same needs and desires and wants as a regular human being," Murphy said.

"His unpredictability and his vulnerability and this sort of - I don't know if he'll ever be happy," Murphy adds.
And while Shelby has gone from gangster to politician, he's still the same guy at the core.
"He's an MP now, he lives in this mansion, he's richer than his wildest dreams. He has power, but yet I don't think he sleeps well. He's paranoid. He's potentially suicidal at times, so it's - that's fascinating and that continually surprises me, because when are men like that ever satisfied? Who knows, you know?"," Murphy said.
The star explains Shelby's behavior was formed by his time fighting in World War One.
"I think for Tommy, for my character, to see men destroyed and blown up in front of you and you know, to see a body and its component parts makes it very hard to kind of rebuild your belief in humanity. So, he loses any belief in humanity and authority and in faith," Murphy mused.

"But I think gradually over the course of those, of the series that we've done, I think we're seeing all of his values that existed pre-the first world war coming - they're being defrosted, if you like," he continues.
Playing the part meant thorough research for the star.
"I did a lot of reading, obviously, about the First World War, between the wars, I did a lot of reading about PTSD, which wasn't really identified as a condition then, it would have been known as shellshock and men weren't treated for it. So, I guess I, you know, it's your duty to kind of know as much as you can," Murphy said.  "But ultimately the scripts are your main resource, really."
Murphy is ready to bring Shelby back for at least one more season.
"The ambition is to do seven, and then I think Steven Knight has, there's notions or talk about a movie as well," Murphy said.
Season Six of "Peaky Blinders" is currently on Netflix.
