Traditional folk customs is no longer the only way Chinese people celebrate the Spring Festival, as visiting museums, traveling abroad, and going to the movies became popular activities this year.
Data released from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism shows the proportion of visitors to museums, art galleries, as well as libraries and science centers all exceeded 40 percent, at 40.5 percent, 44.2 percent and 40.6 percent respectively.
In addition, all of the 80,000 visitors tickets available for the Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City in Beijing were sold out a few days before the Spring Festival.
This year, movie fanatics were also treated to eight new films released during the holiday period.
China's UnionPay recorded an increase of 1.4 times in spending from cinema goers, contributing over five billion yuan to box offices (around 700 million U.S. dollars) during the week-long Spring Festival holiday.
Similar increases were also registered in some sports items such as in skiing and bodybuilding, which were 1.3 times higher than a year earlier.
However, despite the various new ways to spend the new year celebration, traditional folk customs, like temple fair and lantern riddles, remain popular.
In Beijing, Ditan Park (also known as the Temple of Earth) and Longtan Park Temple Fairs recorded a total of 280,000 visitors a day, while the Yuyuan Garden lantern festival in Shanghai received over 200,000 people.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said 415 million people in all traveled during the period, up by 7.6 percent on a year-on-year basis, spending 514 billion yuan (around 76 billion U.S. dollars), up by 8.2 percent on a year-on-year basis.
In addition, more and more Chinese netizens chose to travel abroad for the holiday.
The National Immigration Administration recorded around 12.5 million entry-exit during the Spring Festival, an increase of one percent on a year-on-year comparison.
The reputation of Chinese tourists abroad has also greatly improved with improving behaviors and courteousness.
In popular tourist destinations such as Thailand, the respect for local folk customs and orderliness of Chinese tourists have left a deep impression on locals.
"Chinese tourists are very nice, very cute and very civilized. They are modest and courteous and polite. They have greatly improved," said a shop owner in Thailand.
