++BLACK FRAMES BETWEEN SOUNDBITES++
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Matt Hancock, UK Health Secretary:
"The Commons is determined to impose its will. It doesn't have a proposal to come out of the European Union. The only actually worked up proposal remains the Prime Minister's deal. But the Commons is very clear that it won't allow 'no deal' to happen. And since 'no Brexit' is, I think, completely unacceptable, that actually brings us back to the Prime Minister's deal as the way to deliver through this. So you know I continue to support the PM's deal because I think it's the best deal to deliver on Brexit. But increasingly it's clear that the other options that the Commons will permit are worse."
2 . SOUNDBITE (English) Matt Hancock, UK Health Secretary:
"The Prime Minister of course can't pre-commit to following exactly what Parliament says because Parliament might support nothing. It might support contradictory options. It might support something that is completely un-negotiable - a unicorn in the parlance - and so we've no idea what will be tabled in the House of Commons by MP's, let alone what the results of the votes will be."
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Matt Hancock, UK Health Secretary:
"We need to get on and deliver on Brexit. We need to get on with that and a general election would only delay things further. But I've been incredibly clear about what's about the impact of tomorrow's votes. Parliament yesterday showed that whether colleagues like it or not, 'no deal' isn't going to happen. And then it's difficult to know what MPs are going to put forward. The government's position is of course we'll listen to that. But we can't pre-commit to it and there is one solution to all this though. And that's to vote for the Prime Minister's deal."
4.  SOUNDBITE (English) Matt Hancock, UK Health Secretary:
"Changing prime minister doesn't actually solve anything. It doesn't change the arithmetic in Parliament and ultimately, you know, we have the challenge of getting Parliament to agree on a way of delivering on the referendum result. That is the challenge that we face. And that's what we need to come together around."
STORYLINE:
UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock on Tuesday maintained that Prime Minister Theresa May's Brexit deal was "the best deal" and that "the other options that the Commons will permit are worse."
His comments on Sky News came after British lawmakers seized a measure of control over the stalled Brexit process from May's foundering government Monday, setting up a series of votes that could alter the course of the UK's departure from the European Union.
The move came after May conceded that Parliament would defeat her twice-rejected divorce deal with the EU again if she put it to a third vote.
With Brexit delayed and the new departure date up in the air, the House of Commons voted to give itself temporary control of the parliamentary timetable starting on Wednesday so lawmakers can vote on alternatives to May's withdrawal deal.
Hancock said the government has "no idea what will be tabled in the House of Commons by MP's, let alone what the results of the votes will be."
Lawmakers who backed Monday's motion, which passed 329-302, hope the planned "indicative votes" will narrow the options down to one that can secure majority support.
Possible options include a "soft Brexit" that maintains close economic ties with the EU or scrapping Britain's departure altogether.
Hancock said the government would listen to what was put forward but that "we can't pre-commit to it."
"We have the challenge of getting Parliament to agree on a way of delivering on the referendum result. That is the challenge that we face. And that's what we need to come together around," said Hancock.
The government usually controls the scheduling of votes in Parliament.
