LEADIN:
It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas in India - as shops, businesses and markets alike welcome the holiday season.
From novelty toy shops to festive German markets, Christmas is all-around.
STORYLINE:
Christmas may still be three weeks away, but this dancing Santa Claus, complete with a guitar is practising a well-known Christmas melody.
The spirit of Christmas has arrived, and for shops in Mumbai, the festive season means brisk business.
But for some, the "true" meaning of Christmas is still about spending time with family and friends.
"My Christmas will be with family and friends. Also keeping in mind, the spirit of caring and sharing with those who are unfortunate," says local shopper Shameen.
"So it would not be something which is very pomp and with a lot of fanfare, but one where whatever you make, you can distribute to the ones who have maybe lost a loved one this year. Or share all your, you know, your toys, your clothes, and your sweets, with the underprivileged."
The Christian holy day, Christmas, has long been a tradition of gift-giving - but presents don't always have to be brought brand new.
At the offices of the real estate company, House of Hiranandani, this year's Secret Santa has a sustainable theme - workers are making gifts out of discarded waste and recycled materials.
"Very often offices have this secret Santa gift exchanges etc. We thought: 'why not do these gifts out of recycled materials?' - something which is already used, but can be used again," explains Mohan Monterio, Chief Human Resources Officer at House of Hiranandani.
From a Christmas tree made from broken pieces of glass to upcycled cups, employees are making all kinds of unique gifts.
"So if you actually look at it, you will see that there is a Christmas tree that has been made out of recycled materials. There are lots of these small personal gifts that employees have created, and they have put their imagination and their creativity into it. And I think that makes for a very valuable gift, you know, more than a Christmas card or any kind of gift you'd buy from the store, these are actually gifts that have been crafted by employees' hands."
The festivities continue into the evening in New Dehli, at the annual German Christmas market, where visitors can buy special gifts, try German beer and if they are lucky - meet Santa Claus.
"Delhi is prepared for any kind of celebration. Whether it's Christmas, Diwali, New Year, Delhiites love to party," says Sumati Sud, Director of Events at the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.
Organized by the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, the two-day ticketed event has been running for 22 years, hosting sellers from India and Germany.
"Now, the spirit is there. It is more of the spirit, where people actually celebrate Christmas, of course as they do Diwali. And it's also the end of the year when people are in a great mood with the ending of the year and you're ushering into the new year," says Sonia Prashar, Deputy Director General at the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce.
"I would say the Christmas celebrations are actually growing in India," she adds.
Hinduism is the largest religion in India and although Christianity only makes up only 2.3 percent of India's population, according to the 2011 national government census, in many parts of the country there is a festive feeling.
