"Well, the closer you get to the ceremony the more excited we get. You know, it was an alien concept to us for the longest time because A, we I didn't realize that we were eligible back in 2005 and until people maybe in 2007 started saying, 'you know, you've been eligible for like two years now.' 'What do you think?' I'd say, 'I don't know. I haven't thought about it at all.' And then they keep asking and keep asking and we'd be like, 'Can you just let it go. We're not and we probably won't get in because we're not cool,' you know, and then it changed, you know. Little did we know. You know we just kept ignoring it. Every time we got asked but, seven years ago, six years ago maybe, they introduced the fan vote, and again we weren't even aware of that either."

4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Elliott/Recording Artist, on when they started to believe induction was possible:
"Last year when people started making like noises about us being in, it became kind of apparent that we - there was a good chance that we would get at least a nomination, you know. And so, everything started kind of speeding up a little bit last year. And then when we actually did get a nomination, we got this huge fan vote, which then really kind of turned our heads as well. Because what it was then, it wasn't just this faceless committee deciding who was cool enough and it was not good enough, it was the fans. And we'd been told the last six years whoever won the fan vote was, you know, inducted. So, we kind of figured if we win it, we'll probably get inducted and we did and we are."

6. SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Elliott/Recording Artist, on who is inducting Def Leppard:
"Brian May from Queen is inducting us. He's been a supporter of this band since - I can't remember, maybe 1981, second album, when we first met him in Europe. We were opening for Ritchie Blackmore's 'Rainbow,' and I think Queen was recording 'Hot Space' in Munich, maybe. And he came in and said hi, and we were like just blown away. In 1983 we happened to be at the L.A. Forum and Brian was in town and he asked if could come and jam with us, and we like, 'are you kidding, of course you can.' So, we became friends, really good friends way back when. And he's been our go-to guy a couple of times. A star on Hollywood, you know, the one of those things they put in the pavement. When we got one of those in 99, Brian was there for us for that one. And when we got the nod that we were gonna be inducted, I reached out to Brian and said, 'Would you do us the honor,' and he said, 'I'd love to.' So, that's nice that we got Brian to do that."

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Joe Elliott/Recording Artist, on how the band celebrated when they learned they were inducted:
"The day we found out was - I think it was the 9th of December last year. We were on tour in the UK and we were on a day off in a fantastic castle hotel on the outskirts of Glasgow in Scotland. And we were having - we decided we'd have dinner to celebrate it. So, we had this huge castle to ourselves. There's nobody else in the dining room. We just sat at this big table, a couple bottles of bubbly and we just cheered each other. That's it, we're in. It's a great moment, it really was."
(Reporter: "Do you think you'll be nervous?")
Joe Elliott: "Not particularly, no. That'll probably come on the night. I mean the nerves will be there in the night, you know, because speeches is one – getting up and going 'how's everybody doing, are we ready to rock?' Is a lot easier than standing there for God knows how long trying to acknowledge and hope to God you haven't forgot anybody. People that go back all the way to the beginning and the band, which is 40 odd years ago, so you know, no pressure."

STORYLINE:
DEF LEPPARD FRONTMAN JOE ELLIOTT NERVOUS ABOUT ROCK HALL SPEECH
Joe Elliott has no problem addressing huge crowds at concerts and festivals, but when his band Def Leppard gets inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Friday (29MARCH2019), it's the speech that will make him uneasy.
"Getting up and going 'how's everybody doing, are we ready to rock?' is a lot easier than standing there for God knows how long trying to acknowledge and hope to God you haven't forgot anybody," Elliott said.
Regardless, Elliott is excited that Def Leppard got the nod, though he was a little surprised when he first heard it could happen.
"Well, the closer you get to the ceremony the more excited we get. You know, it was an alien concept to us for the longest time because A, we I didn't realize that we were eligible back in 2005," Elliott said.
But he didn't pay much attention to any of it.
"We probably won't get in because we're not cool, you know, and then it changed, you know. Little did we know. You know we just kept ignoring it. Every time we got asked but, seven years ago, six years ago maybe, they introduced the fan vote, and again we weren't even aware of that either," Elliott said.
The fan vote proved to be crucial.
"We got this huge fan vote, which then really kind of turned our heads as well. Because what it was then, it wasn't just this faceless committee deciding who was cool enough and it was not good enough, it was the fans. And we'd been told the last six years whoever won the fan vote was, you know, inducted. So, we kind of figured if we win it, we'll probably get in and here we are," Elliot said.
Even though they've been eligible for the past fourteen years, Def Leppard enters the Rock Hall as a first-time nominee. Roxy Music and Stevie Nicks are other first-time inductees this season. Other nominees include Janet Jackson, The Zombies, The Cure, and Radiohead.
Elliott was also proud to reveal that Brian May from Queen will be inducting them.
Elliott says they have a long history, dating back to 1981, calling May a "Go-to guy" for the band.
"We first met him in Europe. We were opening for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, and I think Queen was recording 'Hot Space' in Munich, maybe. And he came in and said hi, and we were like just blown away. In 1983 we happened to be at the L.A. Forum and Brian was in town and he asked if could come and jam with us, and we like, 'are you kidding, of course you can."
Eligibility to the Rock Hall requires artists to be have released their first recording at least 25 years before the year of nomination.
Elliott shared how the band celebrated when they learned they were inducted.
It's a great moment, it really was," Elliott said.
