LEADIN:
Elon Musk's SpaceX faces a "major test" Saturday (January 18), before crewed flights aboard its Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket.
Scientists will test the spacecraft's escape capabilities, intentionally triggering a launch escape less than two minutes after launch.
STORYLINE:
NASA says it's the "final, major test" before astronauts fly aboard SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft and Falcon 9 rocket.
The test, known as an "in-flight abort", is designed to demonstrate the spacecraft's escape capabilities, should it encounter an emergency during launch.
If all goes to plan, the Crew Dragon spacecraft will re-orient itself for re-entry and deploy parachutes for a soft-landing in the Atlantic Ocean, after launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral.
The booster will be discarded, either coming apart in flight or crashing into the ocean.
NASA has not launched astronauts from Cape Canaveral since the last shuttle flight in 2011, instead paying for rides on Russian rockets.
The space agency turned the job over to two private companies - SpaceX and Boeing - to build new capsules to ferry astronauts to and from the International Space Station.
Whichever company delivers astronauts first wins a small U.S. flag left at the station by the last shuttle crew in 2011.
In December, Boeing's new Starliner capsule ended up in the wrong orbit after lifting off on its first test flight, a blow to the company's efforts to launch astronauts for NASA.
Space X has been delivering cargo to the International Space Station for years. The version designed for humans is slightly bigger and safer.
It can carry as many as seven people and has three windows, emergency-abort engines that can pull the capsule to safety and streamlined controls - with just 30 buttons and touch screens - compared with the space shuttle cockpit's 2,000 switches and circuit breakers.
SpaceX was founded in 2002. In 2012, it made history when its Dragon capsule became the first commercial spacecraft to deliver cargo to and from the ISS.
