A satellite earth station in Cornwall is to provide communications services for future missions to Mars.
Almost 10 million British Pounds are being invested to upgrade Goonhilly Earth Station.
STORYLINE
This was once the largest satellite earth station in the world.
Now Goonhilly Earth Station, situated on the Goonhilly Downs in Cornwall, is about to become a major part of future space exploration, including missions to Mars.
It will make Goonhilly the UK's first deep-space satellite base and scientists say they can achieve this in the next 5 years.
"There's a lot of changes in the Space industry at the moment, a lot of excitement, new exploration happening, new missions to the moon and Mars and we're going to be the first private company to be providing the communications services for those missions," explains Ian Jones, CEO of Goonhilly Earth Station.
Almost 10 million British Pounds are being invested to upgrade some of Goonhilly's biggest antenna to enable deep space communication.
Goonhilly has also opened a new data centre to process information for future space missions.
"It's going to bring more businesses here it's going to enable us to build up this hub and ultimately that means more money for Cornwall, it means more jobs for the Cornish people and helps us become that real hub for innovation and tech in the South West," says Chris Roberts, the Head of the Data Centre at Goonhilly.
More than 30 antenna at Goonhilly already receive data from satellites orbiting the earth on everything from TV to the weather.
By 2021 it's planned that further satellites will be blasted into space from Boeing 747s, thanks to Virgin Orbit, the small satellite arm of Virgin Atlantic.
Virgin Orbit is currently creating its UK launch site at Newquay Airport on Cornwall's north coast.
"We've been working together for, gosh, almost two years now and between Cornwall Council and the UK Space Agency, with the idea of bringing launch capability to Britain. And so given that we're an air launch system and we're very portable we've got the ability to very easily move over and we're very excited about launching out of Cornwall," explains Dan Hart, Chief Executive of Virgin Orbit.
It's one of a number of companies working with Spaceport Cornwall, based at the airport.
Aside from futuristic space plans Goonhilly Earth Station already has a solid place in the history books.
Its Arthur Antenna received the very first images of the Apollo moon landing from NASA, which were then beamed across Europe.
