2. SOUNDBITE (English) Marise Payne, Australian Foreign Minister:
"Well, I'm not going to comment on ongoing investigations, but I think the government's decision to ask the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security to review these issues, a very senior parliamentary committee, is the right decision given the concerns that have been raised. We've been extremely open to and engaged with the leaders of media organizations around Australia in recent times to ensure that we are hearing their concerns directly from them and I think the Attorney-General (Christian Porter), the Communications Minister (Paul Fletcher) and the Prime Minister (Scott Morrison) have been very clear in reinforcing that we want that relationship to be open and fully engaged and it most certainly seems to be at the moment."
(Reporter's question off camera: "So you don't have any opinion on whether the balance is right or not?")
"Well, I think that it is a very fine balance and I think that we've seen changes in national security legislation if we're comprehensive in the way we look at it since September 11 (2001) over many, many years now. In some of those changes in legislations, specific provision has been made for the protection of media and journalists, in others it's been in a different way. So this is a timely review. The concerns that have been raise, are concerns raised very genuinely on the part of media organizations, the government has been clear in saying we appreciate that and the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security will have the opportunity to review that comprehensively and to ensure that everyone who wants to make a contribution to that review, everyone who wants to express their view, is able to do so."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Anthony Albanese, Australian Opposition Leader:
"That's a common sense outcome. These are journalists who are doing their job and the fact is, the idea that they were under investigation was an idea that was dismissed by the government just weeks ago. The fact is that you can't go over the other side of the world to have your Foreign Minister (Marise Payne) talk about freedom of the press when incidents such as this are happening at home. The government needs to get on top of this and the government needs to ensure that there is indeed press freedom in this country because that's an essential component of our democracy."

STORYLINE:
Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said Thursday a government committee will review press freedom concerns following a broadcaster's demand that police drop a probe against reporters.
Australian Broadcasting Corporation (AuBC) Managing Director David Anderson says he has written to Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton calling for police to drop their investigation of two AuBC reporters who published leaked classified documents two years ago.
Payne, who was attending a conference on media freedom in London, told the AuBC that the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security will review the media's concerns.
Government assurances that public sector leakers rather than journalists are the targets of recent raids have come under question as new details have emerged of police efforts to track a reporter's movements and to discover who reporters talk to.
Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has supported the AuBC's call for the investigation to end.
