"Well, the point is that we are waiting now for a proposal coming from London. It's now in London that they have to find a way out of this and break the deadlock that exists, no? And to find a majority for a position in the House of Commons. So I hope that in the coming days such a majority position, and cross-party I presume, can be found."
Reporter, off-camera: "What about an extension?"
Verhofstadt: "We don't start to talk about an extension. I don't see any reason to give any extension if first of all we don't know what the majority position is of the House of Commons. Why should we start to give even a short extension, if there is no clear position of the House of Commons? So I don't think that anybody really wants in the European Union to go into a discussion about extension if first of all there is no clear position of the House of Commons."

STORYLINE:
The European Parliament's Brexit coordinator said on Wednesday it is up to the UK to solve the deadlock on Brexit.
Guy Verhofstadt spoke to reporters in Strasbourg as he left a meeting of the European Parliament's Brexit steering committee.
Verhofstadt also said the EU was unlikely to extend the Article 50 deadline and set a new date for the UK's withdrawal, as long as there was "no clear position of the House of Commons".
Members of the UK parliament on Tuesday rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's revised Brexit deal 391-242.
The stinging 149-vote defeat stripped away May's control over the course of Brexit and handed it to the UK parliament, which is divided about what to do next.
